Job Description

The Director of AI Strategy and Operations is responsible for establishing and championing AbbVie’s enterprise AI strategy, governance model, and priority use cases in the application of AI across functions (including drug discovery, clinical development, commercial and operations).  This position leads the AI Strategy and Execution Team of cross-functional leaders focused on AI at AbbVie.

Responsibilities:

  • Enterprise AI strategy: Develop and execute an enterprise AI strategy aligned with AbbVie’s broader business objectives.
  • Operational Excellence: Oversee the establishment and execution of operational frameworks for AI initiatives across functions, ensuring seamless integration across business units.
  • GenAI Expertise: Apply and expand knowledge of Generative AI (GenAI) to drive innovative solutions within biopharma applications.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with internal stakeholders to champion AI initiatives, ensuring they are well-integrated with AbbVie’s strategic vision.
  • Measurement and Reporting: Implement systems to monitor the success of AI initiatives, providing regular updates to senior leadership.
  • AI talent. training and change management: Partner with HR to enhance AI understanding across the organization through targeted training and change management programs.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business (or Management), Life Sciences, Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline, or equivalent work experience is required; a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in a computational field is highly desired.
  • 12+ years of experience in strategy, e.g., from a corporate strategy or management consulting background at a top-tier firm.
  • Strong experience in AI/ML applied to the life sciences, e.g., at an AI-driven drug discovery company, tech firm, or academia.
  • Strong leadership skills with proven ability to influence across teams and organizations. 
  • Broad understanding of emerging technologies in AI/ML.
  • Strong teamwork skills and ability to communicate and persuade at all management levels and thrive in a cross-functional environment.
  • Key competencies include: knowledge of AbbVie's business, experience in AI/ML, enterprise thinking with ability to build credibility within the organization; time management, project management mastery, strong interpersonal skills (i.e. communication adaptability, meeting facilitation, negotiation, mediation, conflict management), and ability to successfully adapt to changing requirements.
