Job Description

Position Overview:

The Director of AI Strategy and Competitive Business Intelligence will be a key leader in driving AbbVie's AI strategy and competitive business intelligence in the application of AI across functions (including drug discovery, clinical development, commercial, and operations). This role requires a strategic thinker with deep, technical AI/ML experience in biopharma, who can leverage their background to: (1) co-develop and champion AbbVie’s AI strategy, (2) lead competitive business intelligence as it relates to AI/ML, (3) conduct and continually refresh AbbVie’s value chain assessment of AI/ML opportunities to inform functional roadmaps, (4) landscape and compare foundational models of relevance for AbbVie, and (5) support on high-priority strategy efforts related to AI (e.g., agentic AI strategy).

This position reports to the VP of AI Strategy and Partnerships and will serve as a trusted advisor to senior leadership.  This role is pivotal in driving our organization towards becoming a leader in the application of artificial intelligence, ensuring that AI initiatives align with our overarching business objectives, delivering tangible business value and accelerating our promise to patients. 

Key Responsibilities:

• Co-develop and champion AbbVie’s enterprise-wide AI strategy and technology ecosystem that aligns with the company's long-term business goals and short-term operational needs.
• Stay at the forefront of AI trends, technologies, and best practices, developing a bimonthly competitive intelligence report, in coordination with other teams that develop competitive intelligence across AbbVie, e.g., Commercial Digital, R&D, BTS, and Corporate Strategy
• Conduct detailed landscaping and benchmarking (where appropriate) of foundational model releases with applicability to AbbVie
• Co-lead detailed value chain assessment of AI/ML opportunities for each function in coordination with BTO and functional leaders, including: (i) conducting outside-in assessment of ‘white space’ / partner opportunities, (ii) workshops to refine and prioritize roadmap of AI initiatives
• Lead high-priority strategy projects of importance to AbbVie, e.g., shaping the agentic AI framework and strategy, organizing an internal AI Summit of top leaders at AbbVie, among others

• Mentor leaders and team members, creating a pipeline of AI champions and

Qualifications

• 10+ years of deep, technical experience and understanding of artificial intelligence and machine learning within biopharmaceutical, life sciences, healthcare, or technology industries.
• Strong computational or CS background
• Undergraduate or graduate degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence, Physics, Mathematics, Computational Chemistry, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Biology, or related discipline.
• Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally with senior leaders and build trust-based partnerships to deliver results and influence change.
• Prior experience in competitive landscape at a major pharma company or biotechnology organization.
• Strong problem-solving mindset and comfort and ability to create structure in ambiguity.
• Excellent executive communication and stakeholder-management skills with a proven ability to bridge technical and business perspectives.
• Ability to relocate to South San Francisco, CA (3-days per week in office)

Preferred:

• 5+ years in management consultant from a Top-Tier consulting firm with deep experience in building AI and digital solutions at scale in the biopharmaceutical industry
• Professional experience at a product-driven technology company (e.g., Big Tech, start-ups)

• The compensation range described below is the range of possible base pay compensation that the Company believes in good faith it will pay for this role at the time of this posting based on the job grade for this position. Individual compensation paid within this range will depend on many factors including geographic location, and we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range.
