Overview: The Center for Equitable Economy and Sustainable Society and the Center for Excellence in Housing and Urban Research and Policy (CHURP) at Howard University are seeking a Senior Research Data Scientist specializing in artificial intelligence, machine learning, health economics, racial wealth gap analysis with a focus on identifying and mitigating racial and ethnic bias. This is a joint position that will be housed in the Center for Equitable Economy and Sustainable Society and partially funded by CHURP. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in data science, statistical analysis, and programming, along with a deep understanding of the intersection of economics, health, social equity, and technology. This position offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research aimed at promoting equitable economic development and social justice.

Key Responsibilities:

Research Design and Implementation:

  • Lead and contribute to research projects focused on health economics, racial wealth gap analysis, and artificial intelligence (AI).
  • Develop innovative research methodologies and analytical frameworks to address complex societal challenges related to racial and ethnic disparities.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of researchers, economists, policy analysts, and community stakeholders to design and execute research studies.
  • Increase the data science and AI footprint at Howard University through research collaboration towards securing external funding.

Data Analysis and Modeling:

  • Utilize advanced statistical techniques and machine learning algorithms to analyze large-scale datasets related to health outcomes, wealth distribution, and socioeconomic factors.
  • Apply data visualization techniques to communicate research findings effectively to diverse audiences, including policymakers, academics, and community members.
  • Develop predictive models to forecast trends and patterns in health disparities and economic inequities, with a particular focus on identifying and quantifying racial and ethnic bias.

Bias Detection and Mitigation:

  • Investigate algorithmic biases and discriminatory practices in AI systems used in healthcare, finance, housing, and other domains.
  • Develop methodologies to detect and mitigate biases in data collection, algorithm design, and decision-making processes, with a specific emphasis on promoting fairness and equity.
  • Work closely with stakeholders such as policy makers, regulators, and program administrators to implement strategies for addressing bias in policy development, program evaluation, and organizational practices.

Thought Leadership and Collaboration:

  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at academic conferences, workshops, and public forums.
  • Collaborate with external partners, including government agencies, non-profit organizations, and industry stakeholders, to leverage expertise and resources in addressing systemic inequities.
  • Mentor junior researchers, graduate and undergraduate students, providing guidance and support in developing research skills and advancing their careers in data science and social policy.

Minimum requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science with specialization in AI and data science.
  • Demonstrated expertise in statistical analysis, machine learning, and data visualization, with proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, or SQL.

Core competencies:

  • Strong background in health, racial wealth gap analysis, or related fields, with a commitment to advancing social justice and equity.
  • Experience working with diverse datasets, including administrative records, survey data, and unstructured sources such as text and image data.
  • Knowledge of ethical considerations and best practices in AI and machine learning, particularly regarding fairness, accountability, and transparency.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences and engage effectively with stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
  • Proven track record of publication in peer-reviewed journals, external funding and experience presenting research findings at conferences and public events.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic research environment, with a commitment to fostering a culture of inclusivity and mutual respect.
