The Opportunity 

The Software Developer Intern will contribute to the development of innovative AI web apps for educational purposes. This role is crucial for supporting the university's initiative to integrate creative AI applications into teaching, learning and assessment, enhancing the student and staff experience through innovative human/machine partnerships in education.  

We encourage applicants who have experience in front-end, back-end, or full-stack development to apply. Whether you enjoy creating user interfaces, specialise in building server-side logic, or enjoy working across the entire stack, you will have the opportunity to collaborate within a team that combines all these skills, and to work with academics from various disciplinary backgrounds.

This is a 6-month internship (average of 9 hours/week), starting in mid-January 2025. We are open to considering flexible working patterns based on the project requirements and timescale. It is a hybrid post, but it’s expected that you will do regular on-campus working.  

Your skills and attributes for success  

  • Demonstrable experience in producing full-stack web apps using high-quality code (frontend: HTML, CSS, JS/Typescript; backend: Node.js, SQL, PostgreSQL) 
  • Good command of version control systems (Git, GitLab, GitHub) and understanding version control methodologies 
  • Solid understanding of security best practices and quality issues in web application development, with strategies to mitigate risks  
  • Familiarity with coding standards, accessibility guidelines, and data protection regulation 
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work with a range of professional and academic colleagues

Employ.ed for PhDs is run by the Careers Service in collaboration with university departments and Schools.  It offers exclusive part-time internships at the University all year round. This internship is only open to current University of Edinburgh PhD students who will be based in the UK for the duration of the internship.
