For over 50 years, Charles River Associates has been a premier consulting firm that offers employees a place to learn from a diverse group of consultants, industry experts, and academics. At CRA you will be exposed to leading minds who use economic, financial, and business analysis to solve complex world problems for an impressive roster of clients, including major law firms, Fortune 100 companies, and government agencies.  Through a collegial environment, formal and informal training opportunities, and a broad array of professional development resources, your experience at CRA will open doors for you as you accelerate your career.

Job Overview

Consultants in CRA’s Energy practice have researched, published, taught, and consulted on energy matters for a wide range of clients, including electric and gas utilities, investors, power asset owners and developers, power agencies, large industrial firms, and clean energy technology leaders. Our work in the energy industry has guided the energy transitions of major firms, established legal precedents in economics, and set new standards in market design and oversight.  We have advised on developing the structure of national and regional competitive markets, reorganized multi-billion-dollar companies, testified in hundred-million-dollar damages litigation, and played a key role in most North American utility mergers and acquisitions that have taken place over the last decade.

As a Senior Associate, you will provide strategic and M&A guidance to our energy clients facing fundamental questions around the strategic direction of their organizations, including developing their vision and strategic options, identifying areas and opportunities for growth and value enhancement, and recommending strategic priorities. Strategy recommendations are usually made based on extensive fact-based research and analysis and after taking external market trends such as sustainability, sector transformation, grid edge development, and other issues into account.

Our clients are typically senior executives of their utilities or other industrial organizations. Our existing client network covers many of the electric and gas utilities in North America and Europe. We also support private equity investors with strategic due diligence, portfolio optimization, and post-merger support.

Qualifications

We are seeking experienced hires from managers to senior advisors. Candidates should have experience in consulting or working directly for energy companies on strategy and M&A matters. Senior advisors will be expected to contribute significantly to client development. Graduate degree in economics, business, finance, operations research, or engineering is strongly preferred. You will also have experience with, or exposure to, the following areas focusing on the energy transition:

  • Electrification
  • Generation retirement and replacement studies
  • Renewables and storage
  • Integrated planning
  • Distributed energy resources (e.g., EVs, microgrids, demand response)
  • IT/OT solutions
  • Advanced energy technologies

Excellent written and verbal communication skills required. Must demonstrate a passion for leading and supporting clients through the energy transition. Some travel is expected during normal conditions, primarily in North America.
