OpenAI’s People team aims to hire, engage, and retain world-class talent to safely build and deploy universally beneficial Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). The HR team, a vital subset of the People team, supports a diverse group of scientists, engineers, and business professionals, with expertise in employee relations, immigration, compensation and benefits, learning and development, project management, and more.
About the Role
We’re looking for an HR Business Partner to enable OpenAI’s success by driving organizational design, talent development, and change management - specifically with our People and Finance teams, and whatever else comes our way. Collaborating with cross-functional partners, you'll implement world-class People programs, foster a high-trust culture, and enhance performance management and career development through HR strategy, leadership support, and employee engagement.
This opportunity is excellent for a HR Business Partner looking to take on additional responsibility in their career with opportunities for mentorship, training, and development to further enhance skills in employee relations and talent management.
You’ll have several areas of responsibilities, including:
Enable Staff: Understand the work of our business and G&A teams to support their unique needs.
Partnership: Partner with business leaders to understand their objectives and provide HR guidance that aligns with company goals.
Collaboration & Process Improvement: Collaborate with the broader HR team and cross-functional partners to build efficient, world-class initiatives and people programs.
Consultation & Leadership Support: Provide custom solutions and guidance to leaders, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives.
Employee Development & Engagement: Drive talent management processes, including performance management, career development and employee engagement.
Change Management: Support change management efforts across teams and our talent population to enhance workforce effectiveness.
Trust & Culture: Protect a high trust culture through thoughtful resolution of employee concerns and fostering open communication.
We’ll look for these qualities, experience, and skills:
HRBP Expertise: 5-7 years of HR experience, with a focus on business partnership, employee relations, and talent management. Experience in managing employee relations matters, including coaching and handling delicate situations, with support as needed.
Agility and Growth: Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple priorities, while continuously learning and adapting.
Leadership & Change Management: Strong ability to manage vertically and laterally, support leaders, drive change management initiatives, and lead organizational growth or transformation, with experience serving as a trusted advisor to leaders.
Communication & Relationship Building: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of drafting performance plans, annual reviews, and employee policies. Proven ability to build relationships, offer expert insights, challenge leaders, and maintain productive relationships.
Problem-Solving & Data-Driven Insights: Excellent critical thinking, root cause problem-solving abilities, and proficiency in using HR metrics for data-driven decisions. Ability to diagnose cultural or management issues and implement effective strategies for improvement.

Location and Workplace
This role is based in either our San Francisco HQ or New York office with occasional travel to other offices (typically quarterly). We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office with optional work from home on Thursdays and Fridays. We also offer relocation assistance to new employees.
Our open-plan offices have height-adjustable desks, conference rooms, phone booths, well-stocked kitchens full of snacks and drinks, and located near public transportation and lively city neighborhoods.
