You are applying to the ILO generic internship roster, which is published twice per year. The roster will be made available to all departments and field offices, which will then select and directly contact suitable candidates. Due to the high volume of applications, the ILO does not inform candidates about the status of their application.

  1. Increase your understanding of relevant issues at the international level by involving you directly in the work of the Office and the application of ILO principles, programmes and strategies.
  2. Gain practical experience with the ILO directly related to your field of study.

IMPORTANT:

The internship role is in Application Management Services (AMS) branch of INFOTEC. AMS is at the heart of the ILO’s digital transformation and is responsible for the design, development, and management of critical enterprise applications, business intelligence tools, and collaboration platforms. The team plays a key role in streamlining workflows, automating processes and optimizing data management and analytics to enable staff and stakeholders to access and utilize information efficiently.

Led by the Chief Digital Officer (CDO), AMS provides end-to-end expertise in managing the ILO’s portfolio of applications, ensuring compliance with ILO’s digital standards and governance frameworks. More than just a technology enabler, AMS serves as a strategic partner in innovation. As the ILO continues to evolve in a rapidly changing digital landscape, AMS remains committed to delivering cutting-edge solutions that amplify the organization’s reach, effectiveness, and mission for decent work worldwide.

Learning areas

As an AI & Data Innovation Intern, you will gain hands-on experience in exploring and implementing AI-driven solutions that enhance workplace efficiency and optimize data utilization across the ILO. You will work closely with specialists in IT, data analytics, and business applications, collaborating with different units to identify opportunities where AI and data can improve productivity, decision-making, and knowledge management. This internship provides a unique opportunity to engage in digital transformation initiatives, working with cutting-edge technologies to support ILO’s mandate.

As an intern in INFOTEC’s Application Management Services (AMS) team, you will be exposed to a wide range of topics, including:
•    AI Use Case Development: Identifying and drafting AI use cases tailored to different business units, exploring how AI can optimize daily workflows and enhance productivity;
•    Data Analytics & Reporting: Assisting in data extraction, transformation, and visualization to support evidence-based decision-making. Working with dashboards, reporting tools, and business intelligence platforms to make complex data accessible and actionable;
•    AI-Assisted Coding & Automation: Exploring AI-enhanced programming tools to support software development and business automation. Assisting in developing prototypes that integrate AI into coding, collaboration, and workflow automation;
•    AI in Communication & Collaboration: Researching and testing AI tools that enhance workplace communication, document processing, and knowledge-sharing platforms;
•    Business Process Optimization: Engaging with business units to understand operational challenges and explore AI-driven solutions to improve efficiency.

During the internship, you will work alongside experienced professionals and may be asked to contribute to the following tasks:
•    Conduct research on AI trends and emerging technologies relevant to the ILO’s operations;
•    Analyze business processes and identify areas where AI-driven automation can improve efficiency;
•    Assist in the development of AI-powered prototypes, chatbots, or data-driven tools that can support knowledge management and workflow automation;
•    Support the enhancement of reporting and data visualization tools to improve access to key insights;
•    Evaluate AI-based productivity tools (e.g., AI-enhanced documentation, virtual assistants, intelligent search);
•    Collaborate with different business units to understand their AI and data needs, gathering requirements, and supporting the implementation of AI solutions;
•    Work with developers and data specialists to document AI use cases and assess their feasibility;
•    Contribute to AI and data governance discussions, ensuring compliance with ethical AI and responsible data management practices;
•    Review and test information accuracy and engage information experts to fine tune AI solutions.

This internship will provide practical exposure to AI applications in a global organization, allowing you to develop technical, analytical, and problem-solving skills while working in an international, multicultural environment.
 

Interns should expect to devote 10% to 20% of their time to administrative tasks.

Education

The candidate must be enrolled at least in a Master's degree programme or should have completed such a programme no longer than 1 year ago in one of the following fields:
•    Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Business Analytics, Information Technology, or a related technical field;
•    Candidates with backgrounds in Engineering, or Business Administration with a strong focus on data, AI, or digital transformation will also be considered.

Experience

  • Prior coursework or hands-on experience in AI, machine learning, automation, or data analytics is highly desirable;
  • Familiarity with AI applications in business processes, including workflow automation, knowledge management, or digital collaboration, is an advantage;
  • Experience in coding and scripting (Python, R, SQL, JavaScript, or similar languages) would be beneficial;
  • Understanding of cloud-based AI services, open-source AI frameworks, or chatbot development is a plus.

Languages

  • Working proficiency (oral and written) in English and knowledge of the other the ILO’s official languages (French, Spanish) are an asset
  • Fluency in English is highly desirable as all ILO systems and data are in English

Selection process:

Following a first screening by the Human Resources Development Department (HRD), hiring departments will short-list applicants. You will be directly contacted should an internship opportunity match your profile. If you have not been contacted by any department within six months after your application, you can consider that you have not been selected by any department for this roster. If still eligible, you may apply to the next roster. 

If shortlisted, you may be contacted by the hiring department for a written test and/or interview. The ILO may use communication technologies such as Skype, Video or teleconference, e-mail, etc for the assessment and evaluation of candidates.

Stipend/Financial compensations:

As an intern in Geneva, you will receive a stipend of 2450 CHF per month from the ILO, unless you receive funding through another institution (for example your university or a foundation). If you receive partial funding, ILO will cover the difference to ensure you receive 2450 CHF per month. Your travel to Geneva will be at your own expense. In addition to the amounts referred above, each intern shall receive the amount of CHF45 per month, or the equivalent amount in the currency in which the monthly stipend is paid, which is a contribution from the Office towards the cost of medical insurance to cover the period of the internship.

Qualified candidates from non- and under- represented countries may be eligible for a special fund that provides financial assistance for round-trip airfare (economy class) in addition to the stipend.

Insurance:

Please note that the ILO does not take responsibility for any costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship. You will be responsible for your own insurance coverage for illness and accidents for the duration of the internship at the duty station (whether Geneva or the field).
