Thesis Worker at Volvo Cars
Welcome to explore the world of Volvo Cars by writing your thesis with us! As a thesis worker in our organization you are supported by a supervisor who follows you during your project. All thesis projects are arranged in business critical areas and therefore you will be able to contribute to our company purpose – providing freedom to move in a safe, sustainable and personal way – from day one!
Background
As Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) continue to rise in importance within the automotive industry, efficient thermal management systems are critical for ensuring the performance and lifespan of high-voltage (HV) components, particularly batteries. Proper cooling systems are essential for managing thermal loads during vehicle operation, thereby optimising energy use and extending battery life.
However, simulating these systems over large datasets, such as thousands of drive cycles, presents challenges in terms of cost, speed, and accuracy. The significant computational and resource expenses required to handle such data volumes demand optimisation.
Modelica, a flexible open-source modeling language, is well suited to implement a framework for solving these types of problems. In combination with Machine Learning techniques, efficiency of the simulations can be significantly improved.
Objective and Scope
The primary objectives of this thesis are to:
1. Develop BEV thermal system models (such as coolant systems) using Modelica.
2. Optimise the cost, speed, and accuracy of running these simulations, especially when scaled to handle thousands of drive cycles.
3. Leverage machine learning techniques to enhance simulation performance by analysing data from suppliers and improving decision-making.
Detailed Scope:
• Literature Study and review
• Modelling BEV Thermal Systems (plant and controller) using Modelica
• Optimisation of Cost, Speed, and Accuracy of simulations
• Incorporation of Machine Learning algorithms to enhance the efficiency of the simulation framework
• Comparison with Existing Systems and Validation
• Master Thesis report
