Embedded within the SI (Sustainable Investments) Data Operations team and reporting into the Senior Manager, the Sustainable Investment Data Scientist will coordinate the research, design, and implementation of programmatic solutions. Reduction of risk is a requirement; tools and software are fundamentally integrated into production processes and hence must be scalable and robust. Additionally, this role will support projects focusing on the analysis, assessment, and provision of sustainability and ESG data in accordance with index methodology and compliance; ensuring data is of high quality and index ready whilst maintaining regulatory standards and controls across the index data quality chain. The role will encompass supporting initiatives related to thought leadership content, new materials for internal and external client engagement and support the overall quality of team results including but not limited to the delivery of monthly and quarterly Index Reviews. 

 

Primary Responsibilities 

  • Connect with the Index technology development team for key projects and initiatives. 

  • Develops queries and applies programming to access, transform, prepare, and validate data for use in FTSE Russell indices. 

  • Performs analytics to support business decisions. 

  • Identifies and analyzes data inconsistencies and errors, details data assumptions, and searches to tackle data gaps. 

  • Engages with internal partners to understand and probe business processes to develop controls. Provides structure to requests and translates requirements into an analytical approach. 

  • Work in close collaboration with a group of analysts with technical and index/data expertise. 

  • Support production by helping to ensure operational processes and workflows are running efficiently, diagnosing, or debugging errors and failures, and collaborating closely team members to understand any errors and suggest/initiate corrective measures. 

  • Coordinate with the B&I Operations Compliance and Controls function to ensure a controls and governance framework which adheres to regulatory obligations. 

  • Become a domain expert in SI datasets; this is an exciting area to work in which provides meaningful challenges. 

 

Key Skills 

The ideal candidate would be a motivated and highly organized specialist eager for the challenge of a multi-layered role which encompasses sustainability research, analytics and modelling, and end to end operational strategy, skills should include: 

  • Demonstrated ability design/coding web-based front-end systems; software design and support software support. 

  • Expertise with Python (preferred) and other programming languages, relational databases, SQL, and cloud computing. 

  • Knowledge of Business Process Mapping. 

  • Possess (or potential to possess) a comprehensive understanding of asset-type specific methodologies, models, and analytics. 

  • Expertise in global financial markets; financial industry experience, sustainability/ESG data, ideally supporting Index and Data Management processes preferred. 

  • Good interpersonal skills: excellent oral and written skills, ability to articulate sophisticated specifications and requirements to key collaborators. Expertise in drafting detailed specification requirements. 

  • Outstanding project management skills 

  • Exceptional quantitative and analytical skills. 

  • Entrepreneurial approach.
