Job Description

Join the team redefining how the world experiences design.

Servus, hey, g'day, mabuhay, kia ora, 你好, hallo, vítejte!

Thanks for stopping by. We know job hunting can be a little time consuming and you're probably keen to find out what's on offer, so we'll get straight to the point.

Where and how you can work

Our flagship campus is in Sydney, Australia but Austria is home to part of our European operations. And you have choice in where and how you work, we trust our Canvanauts to choose the balance that empowers them and their team to achieve their goals.

Fun fact, a big part of our Austrian operations is developing the AI product within Canva to help reimagine how artificial intelligence can be used in design. Pretty cool ha!

What you’d be doing in this role

As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.

  • Finding strategic Insights – combining deep product knowledge with data to produce strategic insights about how to grow the business and improve a feature.
  • Experimenting – designing experiments to test the hypotheses formulated from user research and your own strategic insights, analyzing the results, and using them to influence next steps.
  • Influencing with Metrics – designing and building goal metrics, forecasting, and setting targets, designing analytic events that track feature usage, and building them into dashboards that track performance and product usage patterns. Then using them to diagnose issues at a high level and influence what the business does.
  • Supporting with General Data– supporting the business by providing the data on feature usage that gives them the context they need to make good decisions, and working out ways of making this process more efficient (e.g. via self-serve).
  • Helping us extend data literacy and curiosity throughout the whole company.

You're probably a match if

  • You have proven record of influencing the business with data, and directly contributing to company growth.
  • You have a strong base in the fundamental technical skills of data science – hypothesis-driven problem solving, using SQL to wrangle data, numerical thinking, designing & forecasting goal metrics, uncovering strategic insights, and storytelling with data.
  • You have the soft skills & personal qualities that tend to make data scientists successful – attention to accuracy, interpreting data faithfully, speaking persuasively in public, and writing concisely and clearly.
  • You have experience with other technical data science skills, especially experimenting, designing analytic events, & data warehousing.
  • You ideally have a grounding in mathematics/statistics and a bachelor's degree in a STEM area.
  • You have worked in a tech company before and are familiar with the way a tech company operates and some of the concepts particular to our industry (e.g. growth accounting, product funnels, designing analytic events, etc.).

About the team

The remove.bg group (part of Canva Generative AI) is responsible for the standalone product remove.bg. Launched in 2018, remove.bg has established itself as the best fully automatic, AI-powered background remover with high-quality results and automation-friendly APIs.

In mid-2024, the product reached 33M monthly active users, 20k+ subscribers and an annual revenue of ~USD 14M (of which 92% is recurring). The vast majority of all users (99%+) use the free version of the product, many without even signing up. As a Data Scientist in remove.bg, you will help us grow the standalone product and its contribution to the Canva ecosystem.

The Data Scientist role is essential for the success of the remove.bg group. It uncovers opportunities for the product to grow and provides concrete recommendations as to how to realise those opportunities.

Similar to any Data Scientist at Canva, this role involves Finding Strategic Insights, Experimenting, Influencing with Metrics, Supporting with General Data and extending data literacy.

However, a Data Scientist role in the remove.bg group also has unique aspects that are not always common across all other areas of Canva:

  • Diverse stakeholders – Collaborate with product, marketing, and sales teams to resolve competing priorities and drive value across all areas.
  • Fast development cycle – Support rapid releases and changing priorities with timely data insights in a faster-paced product environment.
  • Breadth of context and skills – Handle a wide range of responsibilities, requiring familiarity with multiple systems, objectives, and strategies.
  • Diverse tech stack – Adapt to different tools and collaborate with Analytics Engineering to integrate remove.bg’s tools with Canva’s ecosystem.
