Team Overview
The Data & Analytics team plays a significant role in the Navy Federal Financial Group (NFFG) organization. The team’s mission is to drive the NFFG strategy through the use of data and analytics to inform strategic initiatives and measure results. The team is responsible for data engineering, data governance, research and analytics, and internal reporting and metrics.
Work on the team includes:
- Analyze various sources of data to identify key insights related to NFFG delivery channels and initiatives.
- Data collection and preparation, data analysis and visualization, and storytelling with data.
- Assess complex processes and identify opportunities for the use of advanced analytics and process automation.
- Consolidate NFFG business metrics to create a comprehensive executive management report including board package for monthly board meeting.
- Develop and maintain business metric dashboards using Tableau and Power BI.
- Monitor and optimize predictive models currently in deployment and identify opportunities for building new models to inform NFFG business initiatives.
- Assess data quality and data integrity to ensure procedures and records are intact with enterprise data governance, privacy and risk practices.
- Develop use cases that focus on use of data to inform strategic initiatives and achieve organization goals.
Potential Project:
This role will be a member of the Data Analytics & Reporting team at NFFG. The team possesses a wide range of expertise ranging from data engineering, data governance, data science, data & analytics, model development, business intelligence, and internal management and reporting capabilities. The role will have high visibility with opportunities to work cross across various teams within the NFFG and collaborate with our NFCU business partners. It will be essential for the Summer Associate to have a learning mindset, be a problem solver, and self-starter in order to effectively contribute to the team.
The Summer Associate would be responsible for assistance with data engineering efforts including data clean up and documentation from various sources (e.g. Azure Data Lake and third-party data sources). The Summer Associate will have the opportunity to perform qualitative and quantitative analyses of various data sources to inform the NFFG strategic initiatives across the different NFFG delivery channels. Based on the analyses, the Summer Associate would be responsible for assistance with the creation of artificial intelligence models to identify the opportunity analyses for the different product lines.
- Support the delivery of strategic analytics solutions across the organization with solutions drawing on descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive analytics and modeling.
- Leverage a broad set of modern technologies – including Python, SQL, Tableau, Power BI – to analyze and gain insights within large data sets
- Analyze big data in order to build data driven insights and high impact data models.
- Evaluate model design and performance and perform champion/challenger development.
- Analyze model input data, assumptions, and overall methodology.
- Using statistical practices, analyze current and historical data to make predictions, identify risks, and opportunities, enabling better decisions on planned/future events
- Provide analytics insights and solutions to solve complex business problems
- Apply business knowledge and statistical modeling techniques when building data structures and tools
- Collaborate with other team members, subject matter experts, pods, and delivery teams to deliver strategic advanced analytic based solutions from design to deployment
- Examine data from multiple sources and share insights with leadership and stakeholders
- Transform data presented in models, charts, and tables into a format that is useful to the business and aids in effective decision making
- Identify improvements to the way in which analytics service the entire function
- Prepare project deliverables that are valued by the business and present them in such a manner that they are easily understood by project stakeholders
- Perform other duties as assigned
This position is open to individuals pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in the following programs: data science, data analytics, and/or business intelligence.

- Self-starter with significant experience in managing multiple priorities independently
- Significant experience in problem resolution including determining root cause, scope, and scale of issues
- Experience that demonstrates the ability to research, compile, and document data, business processes, and workflows

Technical skills:
- Moderate skill in descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive analytics and modeling; demonstrated success in building models that are deployed and have made measurable business impact
- Working knowledge of advanced techniques such as: SMOTE, dimension reduction techniques, natural language processing, sentiment analysis, anomaly detection, geospatial analytics, etc.
- Demonstrates a deep understanding of the modeling lifecycle
- Moderate skill data mining, data wrangling, and data transformation with both structured and unstructured data; deep understanding of data models
- Skill interpreting, extrapolating, and interpolating data for statistical research and modeling
- Advanced skill in Data Interpretation, Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis
- Advanced skill in Python, R, and/or Scala
- Moderate skill in SQL and querying (able to pull/transform your own data)
- Knowledge of cloud computing technologies such as: Apache Spark, Azure Data Factory, Azure DevOps, Azure ML (Machine Learning), Hadoop, Microsoft Azure, Databricks, AWS, Google Cloud
- Understanding of data models, large datasets, business/technical requirements, BI tools, statistical programming languages and libraries
- Familiar with Data Engineering concepts
- Familiar with the use of standard ETL tools and techniques
- Familiar with the concepts and application of data mapping and building requirements
- Demonstrates a deep understanding of multiple data related concepts
- Familiar with Data Integration, Data Governance and Data Warehousing
- Moderate skill in Data Management, Data Validation & Cleansing and Information Analysis
