Job Description

With broad-based understanding of emerging technologies and processes an imperative towards future employment, study programs offered by Griffith’s School of Information and Communication Technology provide an appealing option for future students.

Global research expertise in industries relating to big data, coding, app development and cyber security ensures an overriding enterprise and initiative in study program development and delivery.

These Senior Research Fellow and Research Fellow positions will work within the research group of the Director of Blockchain and Network Security.

The successful candidates will work on a project aligned with the ONI funded research topic on ‘Linking Digital Payments to Crime Using Big Data Machine Learning Tools’. The primary focus of this role is to investigate tracing suspicious digital payments and supporting the investigations by law enforcement authorities. This flagship project includes extracting transactions features from blockchain networks, analysing with machine learning techniques, and reconstruction of provenance for global payment networks. Success in this role requires collaboration with the research teams from the University of Melbourne and the University of Queensland.

The successful candidates will be able to extract raw data from blockchain networks using various APIs and filter them. Ability to write necessary tools using C, C++, Java and Python and use of Web3 APIs is essential. You will have demonstrated evidence of a passion for research in blockchain protocols and feature extraction, with a strong desire to extract undertake research in anomaly detection using machine learning tools.

Key responsibilities of the positions include:

  • Conduct research that contributes to the research objectives of the Research Group.
  • Develop a good publication record (Grade 1) or maintain a good publication record (Grade 2) in high impact, international, esteemed peer-reviewed journals and to seek competitive funding.
  • Contribute to the Institute/Centre’s research projects as appropriate to research skills.

There are three positions available, one Senior Research Fellow, one Research Fellow Grade 2 and one Research Fellow Grade 1. The three positions are fixed term (until 19 December 2025), full time and primarily based at Griffith University Gold Coast. As Griffith is a multi-site University you may be required to work across other locations and as the project is a collaboration with the research teams from the University of Melbourne and the University of Queensland you may also be required to work across the locations of those institutions.

Griffith University’s sites are located on the lands of the Yugarabul, Yuggera, Jagera, Turrbal, Yugambeh and Kombumerri peoples.

Salary Range
The full time equivalent base salary for Senior Research Fellow is in the range $135,319 - $156,035 per annum + 17% superannuation. The total FTE package will be in the range $158,323 - $182,561 per annum.

The full time equivalent base salary for Research Fellow Grade 2 is in the range $110,464 - $131,180 per annum + 17% superannuation. The total FTE package will be in the range $129,243 - $153,481 per annum.

The full time equivalent base salary for Research Fellow Grade 1 is in the range $86,526- $101,354 per annum + 17% superannuation. The total FTE package will be in the range $101,236 - $118,585 per annum.

You will also have:

  • A PhD or equivalent qualifications/work experience in a relevant field: Blockchain Technology, Machine Learning, Data Analytics, Financial Intelligence.
  • Good publication track record in high impact journal as the first author.
  • Demonstrated successful experience in working on funded research projects.
