About the opportunity 

The Matilda Centre for Research in Mental Health and Substance Use provides a world-first synergy of leading epidemiological, prevention, early intervention, and treatment research and translation programs in substance use and mental disorders. The Matilda Centre brings together researchers in broad fields to share skills, integrate data, and harness new technologies to shed light on the nature and understanding of substance use and mental disorders as well as develop and trial innovative prevention, early intervention, and treatment programs.

We are seeking a Research Officer to conduct statistical analyses across multiple projects focussed on understanding and preventing mental and substance use disorders, including evaluation of culturally-inclusive school-based wellbeing programs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth.

Your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Assist with all aspects of data analysis and management including analysis planning, refinement and implementation, data visualisation and reporting

  • Lead the management, cleaning, transformation and analysis of research data, ensuring all steps are systematic, well-documented and reproducible.

  • independently apply diverse statistical approaches to address novel research questions across a range of datasets including cohort and clinical trial data

  • manage data reporting, ensuring data integrity and excellence in research publishing and impact

  • work collaboratively within our supportive team

  • provide strategic advice on research direction, methodology, and compliance, keeping the team updated

  • Advise, liaise and collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders both within and outside the University of Sydney.

About you

  • Honours or Masters tertiary qualification psychology, public health, biostatistics, mental health and addiction or in a relevant field

  • strong experience using statistical applications including Stata, Mplus, SPSS and R

  • experience analysing data using a range of diverse statistical approaches, and ability to upskill efficiently to apply new approaches where needed

  • previous experience with clinical trials analysis, structural equations modelling, causal mediation, and/or multi-level repeated measures analyses would be well regarded

  • excellent written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated report writing skills

  • excellent interpersonal skills, and proven ability to work and liaise with others

  • outstanding attention to detail and proven ability to clearly organize and document analysis procedures and work flow

  • demonstrated capacity to work ethically and abide by confidentiality and privacy constraints at all times

  • proven ability to manage and prioritise workload and to meet deadlines.
