The Privacy Team at OpenAI is committed to integrating privacy as a foundational element in OpenAI's mission of advancing Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). Our focus is on all OpenAI products and systems handling user data, striving to uphold the highest standards of data privacy and security. 

We build essential production services, develop novel privacy-preserving techniques, and equip cross-functional engineering and research partners with the necessary tools to ensure responsible data use. Our approach to prioritizing responsible data use is integral to OpenAI's mission of safely introducing AGI that offers widespread benefits.

We are seeking a Research Engineer who thrives on developing and implementing cutting-edge privacy-preserving techniques for AI and machine learning. This role is perfect for someone who finds motivation at the intersection of innovative research, product development, and robust privacy solutions.

In this role, you will:

  • Develop and integrate state-of-the-art privacy-enhancing technologies into our platform.

  • Collaborate with other research teams to ensure our model training and deployment stack meet the highest standards of data privacy.

  • Conduct thorough evaluations to validate the effectiveness of privacy enhancements in our stack.

  • Work closely with the Legal team to ensure that our privacy tools and methodologies comply with Legal standards and organizational practices.

  • Perform threat modeling and develop innovative techniques to better understand and prevent novel threat vectors, such as model inversion and membership inference attacks.

Your work will not only contribute to OpenAI’s goal of ensuring AGI benefits all of humanity but will also help shape the discourse on privacy in the age of AI, fostering a broader impact on the technology industry and society at large.

You might thrive in this role if you:

  • Have extensive experience in researching and applying privacy-preserving methods in production environments.

  • Be willing to dive into large ML codebases to debug.

  • Hold a Ph.D. or other degree in computer science, machine learning, statistics, or a related field.

  • Have a deep understanding of machine learning and machine learning applications.

  • Exhibit strong communication skills, a humble attitude, and a readiness to assist colleagues.

This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.
