Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) invites applications to multiple faculty openings in the new Department of Statistics and Data Science currently being launched. The new department complements the existing Departments of Computer Vision, Machine Learning, and Natural Language Processing, and will be an integral driver of theoretical breakthroughs, technical advances, and applications at scale in artificial intelligence. The Department of Statistics and Data Science will also contribute to MBZUAI’s education mission of training the next generation of AI researchers and practitioners, to tackle some of our society’s most dire needs. The new Department of Statistics and Data Science is planning to recruit 15 faculty in the next 3 years. We are inviting applications for multiple open-rank and visiting faculty positions.
MBZUAI is located in Abu Dhabi and was founded in 2019. It is a young, fast-growing, graduate-level university that focuses on cutting-edge AI research applications and education, with over 50 world-leading faculty led by President, Eric Xing (IMS fellow and ASA fellow). It is already ranked 18th in the world by CSRankings for AI, ML, CV, & NLP and is currently home to 200 Masters and 80 Ph.D. students. In addition to Statistics, the University plans to start new departments in Computer Science, Robotics, and Human Computer Interaction in 2024.
The new Department of Statistics and Data Science will focus on rigorous, high-impact, original research that emphasizes statistical and probabilistic foundations of machine learning and data science, statistical inference and modeling for data-intensive applications, and data-driven research design and decision sciences. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: statistical learning theory, theoretical foundations for deep learning techniques such as transfer learning and active learning, high-dimensional statistics, scalable inference, causal inference, uncertainty quantification, differential privacy, and statistical techniques that address challenges such as data bias and fairness, and enhance the robustness, interpretability, and explainability of AI applications. Candidates with interdisciplinary research in population health, medical imaging, precision medicine, drug discovery, and biological sciences are strongly encouraged to apply.
Applicants will be considered at the levels of Full Professor, Associate Professor, and Assistant Professor. We invite applications from outstanding academics with a strong research focus in Statistics. Successful applicants will be provided an attractive remuneration package and allocated generous start-up research funding.
A small number of distinguished visiting faculty positions are also available.
Please include the following in the application:
· A cover letter
· A statement of research vision and interests
· A statement of teaching interests, experience, and philosophy
· A current Curriculum Vitae
· A list of publications (Optional)
