Since our founding, IDEMIA has been on a mission to unlock the world and make it safer through our cutting-edge identity technologies. Our technology leadership makes us the partner of choice for hundreds of governments and thousands of enterprises in over 180 countries, including some of the biggest and most influential brands in the world. In applying our unique expertise in biometrics and cryptography, we enable our clients to unlock simpler and safer ways to pay, connect, access, identify, travel and protect public places – at scale and in total security.

Our teams work from 5 continents and speak 100+ different languages. We strongly believe that our diversity is a key driver of innovation and performance.

Purpose

Fingerprint recognition has many applications in diverse fields such as police investigation, border control, identity documents, app verification, etc. The most recent breakthrough in fingerprint recognition is contactless acquisition, with a dedicated device or a smartphone. It enables fast acquisition in a hygienic way, without putting fingers on a sensor.

Enrolling fingers without contact means unknown resolution. Since resolution is an important part of a fingerprint identity, it needs to be assessed precisely. To do that, dedicated devices need dedicated hardware to enable precise segmentation.

These sensors can be used in various conditions (different lighting, different fingerprint quality, hand speed, etc) and need to be able to perform precise detections in all conditions. The goal of the internship is to provide a Deep Learning solution to improve the precision of IDEMIA’s fingerprint images segmentation algorithm.

Improved segmented images will lead to better resolution in output image, higher accuracy in recognition system as well as improved confidence in the sensor's capabilities.

Key Missions

The Fingerprint Research team is seeking a motivated candidate, with a solid background in Deep Learning and signal processing to strengthen our team over a period of 5 to 6 months. The internship will cover all aspects of applied scientific research, from exploration of the State of The Art (SOTA), data analysis and adaptation, algorithms design and implementation to final system accuracy estimation. The approach we want to investigate specifically in this internship is the automation of fingerprint and specific characteristics segmentation. The goal of the internship will be to evaluate standard solutions before investigating designed methods adapted to this specific data.

The main objectives of the project:

  • Understand the problem of fingerprint images segmentation, and IDEMIA’s solutions,
  • Design a standard method to extract needed information from an image,
  • Apply the chosen method to real-case acquisitions,
  • Analyze the results (accuracy, robustness) and suggest possible improvements,
  • Integrate designed method in IDEMIA’s solution and compare performance to current method,
  • Present results and document findings (report, paper, patent).
