We are currently hiring an Innovation Developer (Data Scientist) for a full-time position in Bristol, UK. In this role, you will be responsible for contributing both creative thinking and technical expertise to solve problems in plasma and data science. Your tasks include developing and implementing advanced analytics and AI models, analyzing complex datasets to identify relationships, trends, and insights, and using this information to enhance innovation developments. You should be capable of leading and inspiring the creative process, as well as developing prototypes and new concepts through practical skills and ideation methods. Emphasizing the inventive and innovative aspects of being a technologist is crucial.

 

Key Responsibilities:

As an Innovator

  • To communicate effectively with senior management, peers, marketing and sales teams on project technical decisions and product benefits.
  • To understand the use of the product in the wider “Jobs to be done” context in support of product business model development.
  • To work towards becoming a recognised expert in their field, capable of supporting complex customer or field service projects – the role may involve some international travel.
  • To support developing and maintaining the products and product road map in their field of competence.
  • Be a flexible thinker, proactive and drive the design and development of new ideas that can make a difference.
  • To have the ability to think broadly and adopt and/or adapt technology or understanding from other fields of interest to create future business opportunities and communicate their potential to peers.
  • To define and implement safe working methods; to understand and apply relevant engineering standards to developments; to maintain awareness of new standards which may affect the business.

As a Data Scientist:

  • Work with colleagues within the Innovation team, OIPT (Oxford Instruments Plasma Technology), and the wider Oxford Instruments group to transform our understanding of data science methods.
  • Develop and maintain AI models capable of bringing new insights into our data and plasma processes.
  • Researching, designing and implementing novel algorithms to promote data driven decision-making throughout the company.
  • Ensure key stakeholders are informed and up to date with data processes via presentations, reports, and other such training material.
  • Assist in the development of our long-term data strategy.

 

Education/Qualifications:

  • A degree or higher qualification in Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or Engineering.
  • An Innovation Developer must be a skilled developer of ideas. A clear background in development is preferred so a developing portfolio or industry track record of innovation is important

 

Professional Skills/ Abilities:

General - Desirable

  • Have a solid understanding of general physics and engineering principles and have a good knowledge of engineering methods and technology relevant to semiconductor processing market.
  • Be able to demonstrate a natural, logical problem-solving ability is important.
  • Have experience of significant involvement in development projects from inception to market delivery with a demonstrable ability to plan to meet business objectives.
  • Be methodical and organised and be familiar with modern project management practices (e.g., Agile and waterfall)

Data Science - Essential

  • Knowledge of data science tools, e.g. Python, Pandas, Scikit Learn, Tensorflow, Spark.
  • Knowledge of statistics and ML techniques.
  • Cloud based and on-premise database experience.
  • Experience of managing lab data.
  • Familiarity with big data, timeseries.
  • Understanding of data security, privacy regulations, and best practices for data handling.
  • Good understanding of version control (e.g., Git).

Desirable

  • Experience with data visualization tools.
  • Experience with sensor technologies and their integration into experimental setups.
  • Working knowledge of Linux/Ubuntu.
  • Experience with API.
