In the plan to create a new hub for mRNA-based vaccine discovery in Cambridge, we are building new laboratories that will be focused on the development of state-of-the-art methods that will be supporting deep product understanding, process and product development, as well as testing of pre-clinical and clinical samples for new mRNA-based vaccines.

Digital Virology Team in Viral Vaccine scientific area is a team of computational biologists that fosters excellence in bioinformatics, computer science, mathematics, and statistics to conduct data driven discoveries, to build innovative models and perform advanced data analytics to accelerate and enhance capability of the research and development of best-in-class viral vaccines. Viral Computational Genomics team (VCG) as part of Digital Virology is bringing data science to scientists and viral vaccine projects to innovate, provide novel insights, and drive decision making.

As Data Scientist you will integrate and analyze complex, high dimensional data sets, and extract biological knowledge to provide advanced data analytics and bioinformatics deliverables for Viral Vaccines R&D projects.

Key Responsibilities:

This role will provide YOU the opportunity to lead key activities to progress YOUR career. These responsibilities include some of the following:

  • Represent Digital Virology as subject matter expert in projects teams.
  • Advise on study design, readout selection and data formats, data analysis strategies.
  • Provide input to the Digital Virology scientific strategy, processes, and objectives in alignment with the GSK Vaccines R&D strategy.
  • Prepare and publish scientific papers and congress reports.
  • Lead up to one PhD students for:
    • Viral computational genomics/data analytics activities for Vaccines R&D.
    • Exploratory data and knowledge integration for hypothesis generation.
    • Data modeling for innovative assays, high-dimensional readouts and viral genomics.
    • Development of tailored systems and analytical models for explorative analytics of pre-clinical, clinical, and epidemiological data.
  • Foster innovation within Digital Virology and keep abreast of the new and most recent developments and innovations in the fields relevant for the role.
  • Communicate Digital Virology activities, results, and principles to internal stakeholders and scientific community, translating complex solutions into simple, understandable and effective messages.
  • Lead or coordinate scientific interactions with multiple partners or international collaborations outside GSK Vaccines.

Basic Qualifications:

We are looking for professionals with these required skills to achieve our goals:

  • MS or PhD in in Bioinformatics, Systems Biology, Computational Biology, Engineering, Data and Computer Science, Statistics, or a similar domain.
  • MS candidates should have three or more years of additional data science experience. PhD with no additional data science experience is acceptable.
  • Two or more years of experience and publication record in one of the following areas:
    • Computational and molecular epidemiology
    • Bioinformatics and genomics
    • Data mining and machine learning
    • Computational / dynamic modeling
    • Multidimensional biomarkers discovery and validation
  • Two or more years of experience in programming (R and Python), data analytics and modeling skills

Preferred Qualifications:

If you have the following characteristics, it would be a plus:

  • PhD in bioinformatics, bioengineering, molecular biology, computational life sciences or related field
  • Analytical, problem solving, change management and project delivery skills
  • Understanding of the Vaccine R&D practices, and data presentation across preclinical, clinical and epidemiology domains
  • Demonstrated communication skills, ability to simplify complex problems and communicate complex solutions in a simple and effective manner
  • Ability to influence performance in a matrix organization through negotiation and communication
  • Experience with viral epidemiology
  • Experience in vaccine design against bacteria and/or viruses
  • Experience with machine learning, especially deep learning
  • Experience with NGS data pipeline development and analysis
  • Ability to adjust behavior and priorities based on changing environment
  • Good networking skills and fluent interactions with one or more scientific communities
  • Cultural sensitivity
  • Fluent English (spoken and written)
  • Spoken and written French or Italian
