Role Summary

As a member of the Evernorth Research Institute (ERI) Data Science (DS), DS Senior Advisor is responsible for leading and enabling artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) within Evernorth Health Services with demonstrable aptitude in data science application to client and member solutions while leading revenue- and margin-generating opportunities.

In addition, a successful candidate is expected to provide thought leadership in various projects and think strategically about technological capabilities as they relate to existing and new data assets, cloud and on-prem compute platforms.  The candidate will champion and drive projects from inception to delivery by working with senior leaders and business partners (Finance, Pricing, Underwriting, Technology (IT), Clinical).

Key Responsibilities

  • Support high-value enterprise initiatives by working with internal stakeholders and understanding business needs. Identify new opportunities to reduce operating expenses (OP-EX) and grow revenue.
  • Employ model life cycle best practices (develop, test, document, productionalize) that enable positive ROI, consistency, reproducibility, and model governance
  • Develop and maintain strong collaborative relationships with technical and business matrix partners (Data Engineering Technical Product Owners, Business Product Owners, ML Center of Enablement, Financial Analysts, Price Actuaries, etc.)
  • Support advanced analytical and Data Science efforts in Clinical, Pricing, Underwriting, performance and inventory forecasting, which could include but not limited to feature clustering, segmentation, logistic or multivariate regressions, decision trees, artificial neural networks, time-series analysis, hierarchical forecasting, generative IA transformer architecture
  • Visualize, interpret, report, and communicate data findings creatively to non-technical and technical audiences using Tableau, ggplot, seaborn, plotly, bokeh, altair, holoviews
  • Think creatively and act as a subject matter expert (SME), mentor and develop junior Data Science team members via established development programs

Qualifications

  • Degree in Data Science, Applied/Health/Quant Economics, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Compute Science, Operations Research, or related quantitative discipline (Bachelor’s required, Master’s or PhD’s preferred)
  • 5+ years of relevant experience
  • Experience with time-series modeling/forecasting and deployment of highly scalable forecast hierarchies with Stats / ML / Neural / Hierarchical forecasts and using multi-step reconciliation strategies
  • Strong proficiency in ML, statistics, healthcare and financial data (e.g., Rx/Dx claims, Electronic Health Records, Average Wholesale Pricing [AWP] and discounts, Wholesale Acquisition Costs [WAC], pharmaceutical manufacturer rebates allocation, etc.)
  • Thorough understanding of ML lifecycle, including necessary tradeoffs and associated risks
  • Expertise in python, pySpark,  R, SQL, version control (e.g., Git), on-prem Linux-based computing,  python notebooks and cluster mounting in cloud computing (AWS, Domino Labs, Databricks)
  • Adherence to best coding practices and fostering a culture of documentation and logging
  • Exceptional ability to communicate and present findings clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills

Scope of Job

As the Data Science Senior Advisor for AI/ML practice management, this candidate will be an instrumental individual contributor ensuring the ERI Data Science team stays on top of the latest methodologies and trends in quantitative approaches to ML/AI algorithm deployment. Additionally, this candidate will support new pricing engines and underwriting models in developing and deploying new hierarchical forecast models, maintaining and utilizing existing models designed to solve business problems. They will utilize ML and AI embeddings to improve client, customer, internal partners experience within modern healthcare, create opportunities for additional revenue or OP-EX, and simplify individual plan benefit journeys for our members and patients. This role will report directly to the Data Science Principal and provide opportunities to engage with multiple business units across Cigna Group.
