Job Summary

The Assistant Chief of Operations and Training oversees and manages the operational and training functions of the fire protection organization to ensure effective resource protection and fire-fighting support. This role includes directing fire response activities, supervising fire training programs, and ensuring personnel readiness for emergencies involving hazardous materials, structural fires, and aircraft incidents. The position emphasizes leadership in planning, scheduling, and executing fire protection activities and preventive measures. Additionally, the Assistant Chief coordinates evidence preservation and fire investigation efforts to determine the cause of incidents. With a focus on safety and efficiency, the role ensures compliance with operational and training standards while fostering a prepared and professional team.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Supervise the operations element of the fire protection organization to deliver quality resource protection and support for aircraft operations and facilities.
  • Oversee fire attack, confinement, salvage, overhaul, ventilation, and rescue operations, including emergency medical care and CPR.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive training programs for fire personnel, including specialized certifications in Fire Officer III, Fire Instructor II, Fire Inspector II, Hazardous Materials Incident Commander, and Airport Firefighter.
  • Direct daily and preventive maintenance of fire equipment, ensuring operational readiness and compliance with safety standards.
  • Plan, schedule, and supervise fire protection activities, including fire drills, pre-incident planning, and community outreach programs.
  • Investigate fire incidents, protect and preserve evidence, and document findings for further analysis and reporting.
  • Ensure the use of appropriate protective gear and equipment in hazardous situations, including scenarios involving toxic gases and hazardous materials.
  • Develop and enforce operational policies, procedures, and safety guidelines.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide mentoring and leadership to subordinate fire personnel.
  • Collaborate with other emergency response agencies to enhance operational readiness and coordination during joint incidents.

Basic Qualifications

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in a fire department, including leadership and supervisory roles.
  • Certifications: Fire Officer III, Fire Instructor II, Fire Inspector II, Hazardous Materials Incident Commander, and Airport Firefighter.
  • Proven expertise in fire suppression, hazardous materials handling, and emergency medical response.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing and executing training programs for fire protection personnel.
  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining fire-fighting equipment, including pumps, foam generators, and other related apparatus.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Fire Science, Emergency Management, or a related field.
  • Experience with fire investigation techniques and evidence preservation practices.
  • Familiarity with advanced fire-fighting technologies and simulation training systems.
