Where You Fit 

This SVP level role consists of three primary areas of responsibility: CAP/CLIA Lab Medical Director, Leadership of Pathology Function, Clinical Development Services, and Support of Business Development. These areas of responsibility are described in greater detail below.

What You’ll Do

CAP/CLIA Lab Medical Director

  • Develop and maintain an effective working relationship with laboratory management.
  • Actively participate in lab operations meetings.
  • Assist in setting goals, objectives, policies and procedures for the lab.
  • Ensure that the laboratory monitors and evaluates the quality and appropriateness of services rendered within the context of the laboratory quality assurance program.
  • Ensure that pathology laboratory complies with all current accreditation and regulatory agencies such as CAP, CLIA, FDA, etc.
  • Ensure that the laboratory maintains a constant state of inspection readiness and is prepared for unannounced inspections by accrediting agencies.
  • Advise in the acquisition of capital equipment
  • Assist in the interpretation and correlation of laboratory data for patient management.
  • Asses requests for new technologies, assays, or equipment for their clinical utility, cost, and workflow.

Medical Staff Management 

  • Coaches, leads, and develops direct reports. Directs hiring, staffing, training, performance management and terminations.
  • Serve as a liaison between the medical staff and the lab operations
  • Ensure the laboratory has sufficient qualified personnel with adequate documented training to meet workload demands
  • Interview candidates for management and supervisory positions in the laboratory
  • Measures and manages key performance metrics to drive operational effectiveness.
  • Ensure that the Pathologists have sufficient experience and expertise to lead their sections of the laboratory.
  • Support medical staff functioning as an integrated team demonstrating leadership and team qualities.
  • Establish short and long term goals and allocate the appropriate resources.
  • Provide cost-effective administration of all laboratory services.
  • Provide educational direction for the medical and laboratory staff.
  • Communicate effectively with accrediting, licensing, and regulatory bodies.
  • Meet with clients, potential clients and attend conferences on behalf of PathAI Dx as needed.

Pathology

  • Oversee PathAI’s pathology function across PathAI including clinical trial support, product development, and translational science support
  • Support end to end trial work 

Clinical Development Services

  • Oversee PathAI’s clinical development services organization including clinical operations and biopharma wet lab capabilities
  • Work closely with the VP of Product and Biopharma business strategy leaders to to generate customer insights, competitive intel, market mapping, pricing strategies market positioning, collateral, advertising, value studies, etc. specifically for biomarker specialty laboratory-based product offerings
  • Use subject matter expertise and market data to inform the choice of laboratory platforms, fit for purpose validation strategies, in-sourcing vs outsourcing, data reporting, and other key requirements to grow biopharma wet lab capabilities
  • Oversee the operations of the biopharma services laboratory offerings
  • Interface with new and existing biopharmaceutical clients and act as subject matter expertise Adhoc Business Development Support
  • Support commercial opportunities including CDx development, Translational research, and Digital Biomarker and Manual Read services
  • Engagement with key Pharmaceutical Companies and CROs to ensure inclusion of PathAI products in their drug development
  • Partner with senior executives and stakeholders across multiple pharma organizations including Precision Medicine, Clinical Development and Commercial to help drive the success of their programs with the use of AI-powered precision pathology tools.
  • Provide biopharma insight to support strategic and scientific value creation across the biopharma division
  • As needed, work with Marketing on initiatives and collateral
  • Coordinate with PathAI biopharma lab and clinical operations team to develop a compelling central lab offering to biopharma customers
    • Identification of necessary capabilities, offerings, partnerships etc. to successfully deliver on a portfolio of clinical trials

What You Bring  

  • M.D. Pathologist with American Board of Pathology anatomic pathology board certification.
  • 10 years pathology practice experience (includes any combination of industry, academic or private practice).
  • Subspecialty training preferred, including experience in any of the current focus areas: dermatopathology, GI pathology, GU pathology, and GYN pathology.
  • Experience managing and leading teams of pathologists.
  • Strong familiarity with technical and medical utility aspects of precision medicine biomarkers and companion diagnostics (e.g. PD-L1, HER2/HER2-low, etc.).
  • Familiarity with current and future trends in digital and AI pathology, including how DP/AI can be used in drug development and companion diagnostics.
  • Experience validating Research Use Only (RUO) assays and digital pathology applications as Laboratory Developed Tests (LDTs) in compliance with CAP/CLIA guidelines and standards.
  • Demonstrated record of accomplishments (e.g., publications in scientific journals, issued US patents).
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, leads and follows PathAI’s mission and values.
  • Ability to work within a diverse environment and coordinate cross-functional teams.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills including ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
