Thesis Worker at Volvo Cars

Welcome to explore the world of Volvo Cars by writing your thesis with us! As a thesis worker in our organization you are supported by a supervisor who follows you during your project. All thesis projects are arranged in business critical areas and therefore you will be able to contribute to our company purpose – providing freedom to move in a safe, sustainable and personal way – from day one!

About this opportunity - Background
In the modern manufacturing landscape, the integration of automated tools and artificial intelligence (AI) has become pivotal in streamlining processes and improving efficiency. Joining processes, such as welding, riveting, and adhesive bonding, are critical in manufacturing industries. These processes require precise control and optimization to ensure the quality and reliability of the final product. Traditional methods of analyzing the results of joining requirements are time-consuming and prone to errors during the design phase.

This thesis explores the use of AI to support manufacturing engineers in focusing on potential severe joining issues based on autogenerated analysis results. The analysis is derived from advanced mathematics applied on 3D models, incorporating material properties, design, and specific joining requirements etc. The analysis tool is now fully integrated into the design process, significantly reducing the time required for each product release. Manufacturing engineers use the analysis results to request design changes on the product, the manufacturing equipment, or both. In some cases, deviations are necessary, meaning that a requirement is not fulfilled but is judged acceptable.

Scope of the thesis work
We have developed a tool to automate the analysis of joining requirements fulfillment. However, the analysis of the results isn't automated and relies on human experience and knowledge. Engineers must review each joining element individually and decide on the appropriate action
AI offers a promising solution by automating these tasks and providing more accurate and reliable results on which joining we need to change the design or can make a deviation.
1.    To identify the key requirements for various joining processes i.e. necessary input data.
2.    To develop an AI-concept model to analyze the results of joining requirements fulfillment.
3.    Highlighting the advantages and limitations of the AI-based approach.
1.    What is needed to teach the AI model for this purpose.
2.    To compare the performance of the AI-based model with traditional methods.
4.    Recommendations for implementing AI in manufacturing engineering to improve joining processes during design phases.
The thesis will be led by Volvo Car Co in close cooperation with Fraunhofer-Chalmers Centre.
