STEM CELL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGIST 

The primary purpose of the Stem Cell Technician position is to assist in the performance of complex, highly specialized and time sensitive technical cell manipulation and testing procedures on irreplaceable, life-saving cellular products used for treatment of cancer patients undergoing Stem Cell Transplantation and/or Cellular Therapy treatment. 

Process stem cell products in the lab, including all QC and testing assays, product transport to area hospitals, thawing for infusion and all support tasks to maintain the lab.

The Stem Cells Technician is responsible for collaborating with Laboratory Facility, Bone Marrow Transplant Services Director and Quality Manager to develop and maintain Stem Cells Processing SOPs that is compliant with all regulatory agencies including DHA, FACT, JCI, FDA, AABB, CAP and AHD policies and procedures.

Assumes overall responsibility for effective and efficient operation of the Stem Cell Lab. Directs, co-ordinates and evaluates the activities of the designated areas for the purpose of maintaining optimal delivery of patient care.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform all steps required for the processing, labeling and documentation of stem cell products.
  • Follow policies and procedures in the processing of stem cells to ensure compliance with American Hospital policies, as well as accrediting agency, DHA, and UAE regulations. Collaborate in the development and update of protocols and guidelines for the Stem Cells Processing SOP Manual
  • Perform procedures using sterile technique in a laminar flow hood. Maintain aseptic technique during processing of products to ensure the integrity, viability, and sterility of cellular products until final infusion to the patient. Must adhere to special cleaning and gowning requirements for the facility
  • Analyse data using spreadsheet and or/graphic software.
  • Demonstrates technical competency in the performance of routine and complex progenitor cells processing, and quality control. 
  • Perform error free calculations, including, but not limited to infusion cell doses, vi-abilities, dilutions, and cell concentrations.
  • Performs basic technical cell manipulation and testing procedures on irreplaceable cellular products
  • Provide result to physicians as per defined standard operating procedure.
  • Conduct analysis of specimens and ensure accurate data capture of laboratory results.
  • Evaluate collected laboratory data and prepare reports as per departmental protocol.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment. Ensure that equipment is used in the correct manner to obtain optimum results and report equipment malfunction are reported appropriately. 
  • Assist in maintaining accurate equipment list for the facility, maintenance schedule and organization of related records and documentation
  • Assumes accountability for improving quality metrics associated with department/unit and meeting organizational/departmental targets
  • Conduct interactions with area program coordinators and related programs to ensure good customer service.
  • Participate in special projects within the department as needed.
  • Record keeping, Documentation, and computer skills: Provides accurate documentation and reporting results to ensure quality of patient care by demonstrating good computer and record keeping skills. Utilize various computer systems and databases to enter, retrieve and compile data, complete patient laboratory records and prepare reports for review by Bone marrow transplant director, quality assurance and physicians.
  •  Assist in maintaining accurate documentation in compliance with FDA's Good Laboratory Practices, Good Manufacturing Practices, Good Tissue practices regulations as well as standards set by other accreditation agencies including but not limited to JCIA, FACT/, CAP. Document deviations and events; notify supervisor, technical and quality management personnel in timely manner.
  • Ensures a safe working environment through compliance with hospital policies and procedures regarding safety, infection control, and security
  • Develops measurable improvement goals for the specific stem cells lab.
  • Provide written notification of testing schedule to patient/caregiver.
  • Adjust to a flexible schedule work schedule as laboratory processing is dependent on patient/donor conditions, product/sample availability, age of collected cells as well as procedural modifications required to adapt to variable nature of incoming cellular products/samples
  • Participate in the HSCT patient care conferences, working closely with the outpatient/inpatient medical, nursing and support staff personnel.
  • Work independently and collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team of hospital professionals and services while patients undergo the transplant process. have a strong knowledge of Bone Marrow Transplant, the transplant process. 
  • Communicate with physicians/investigators, nurses, donor coordinators, internal and external testing laboratories and/or transplant facilities to ensure timely quality patient care. 
  • Demonstrates good time management and organizational skills. Interprets data based on knowledge and experience.

REQUIREMENTS : 

  • Bachelor’s Science degree in medical Lab or Molecular Biology is Required in a relevant scientific field. 
  • Post Graduate Qualification /Advanced Clinical Specialty preferable 
  • At least 2-5 years of Lab Technologist experience in Molecular Biology
  • Experience in processing human marrow or stem cells for transplantation desirable.
  • Laboratory experience in the handling of human blood and marrow and knowledge about the properties of such cells is preferred. Should be familiar with aseptic technique and working in laminar flow hoods.
  • Must be well organized and possess good writing and analytical skills.
  • Current license to lab technologist in country of origin and with the DHA.
  • Working knowledge in stem cells regulation and accreditation of FACT, JCI and DHA requirements preferred.
  • Communicate skill in English is essential.
  • Private hospital experience preferred.
