Sr. Staff Data Scientist 

 

Our team is looking for a Sr. Staff Data Scientist to join the Insights Engine organization to help build and maintain production machine learning systems. You’ll work on large scale satellite imagery processing pipelines, develop high quality datasets, and train models for a wide range of applications. The position requires experience collecting and cleaning data, training and evaluating models, documenting performance, and making optimizations for production use cases.

Day-to-day with your colleagues:  

  • You'll be responsible for the day-to-day data science work that fuels the insights engine: evaluating model performance, building datasets, and training new models, primarily for computer vision tasks, but also expanding into new domains and sources. 

  • You’ll contribute to many of the tools that improve our ability to work with our models and data and enhance our MLOps ecosystem. 

  • Driven by our product management partners, you’ll develop algorithmic solutions to complex customer problems, generating the machinery that deliver unparalleled geospatial insights. 

  • You’ll work on problems like object detection and spatiotemporal analytics while working with Maxar’s high resolution satellites imagery, as well as other remote sensing and geospatial data sources. 

  • Through collaboration with our Experiences and R&D teams, you’ll build data science systems that are guaranteed to directly support user and mission critical workflows. 

  • You’ll collaborate with our geographically dispersed team primarily via Slack and Microsoft Teams.  

 

Requirements/Skills 

Minimum Qualifications:  

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field (e.g., Computer Science, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, etc.), or equivalent experience. 

  • 8+ years of development experience 

  • Must be a U.S. Person. 

  • Strong Python skills! 

  • Deep understanding of computer vision methods and practices 

  • Recent experience with some of the following technologies and practices: 

  • ML tools like PyTorch, HuggingFace, Scikit-Learn, Lightning, etc. 

  • Database and storage technologies like PostgreSQL, Prometheus, S3, etc.  

  • Object Oriented Programming methodologies 

  • GitHub, GitLab, or any other Git tools. 

  • Experience in multi-band image processing and modeling techniques 

 

Desired Qualifications:  

  • Master’s degree in a related field (e.g., Computer Science, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, etc.), or equivalent experience 

  • Understanding of Shape Up or Agile methodologies  

  • Additional ML expertise beyond computer vision, including NLP, graphs, and time series 

  • Experience with: 

  • Orchestration and deployment infrastructure like Kubernetes, Docker, and Argo Workflows 

  • AWS managed services, especially Lambdas/State Machines, Batch, EKS, and Cloudwatch 

  • Distributed computing frameworks like Dask, Ray, and Spark 

  • Experience building, managing, and engineering production pipelines associated with large scale geospatial datasets 

  • Experience in developer-operations, cloud-based image processing workflows, and cloud-based cost reduction strategies 

  • Knowledge of electro-optical and radar satellite image formation, radiometry, and image acquisition metadata 

  • Experience working with time-series geospatial data 

In support of pay transparency at Maxar, we disclose salary ranges on all of our U.S. job postings. We use geographic cost of labor as an input to develop market-driven ranges for our roles, and as such, each location where we hire may have a different range. To accommodate all locations, we have listed the bottom to the top of the possible range, and will share the target range for a specific location during the recruiting discussion. Individual pay will be competitive based on a candidates unique set of knowledge, skills, and geographic diversity, with earnings potential commensurate with experience. The range for this position is:

$107,000.00 - $229,000.00 annually.

Additionally, this position is incentive eligible with a target based on contribution, company performance, and/or individual results achieved; the specific incentive plan and target amount will be determined based on the role and breadth of contributions.
