Summary 

Maxar is seeking a Sr. Staff Data Scientist to join our Insights team. The team is based in Westminster, CO, but Palo Alto, CA is another possible location. 

In this role, you will build state-of-the-art, Cloud-based machine learning, computer vision, and image processing algorithms to extract information and insight from our massive petabyte-scale imagery archive. We work on a wide variety of image-processing topics ranging from deep learning to physics-based models to understand our changing planet. You will contribute to challenging and rewarding projects of national and worldwide importance. 

Maxar has a geographically distributed workforce, including remote employees, across many different time zones. This role operates on a hybrid work schedule with the expectation of 3 days in the office and 2 days remote. 

 

Responsibilities 

  • Develop next-generation technology for image processing, machine learning, and predictive analytics. 

  • Develop innovative, scalable algorithms and software prototypes for advanced image processing projects, including object detection, image segmentation, change detection, and pattern of life analysis. 

  • Work collaboratively with scientists, technical leads, product managers, customers, and end users to collect requirements, design solutions, and deliver software. 

  • Travel to other company sites or customers to interact with business leaders and collaborate with other development teams. 

  • Represent the organization in business development, including briefing customers on company capabilities.  Represent the organization at external conferences and present advancements with our products. 

  • Provide thought leadership and direction to help guide research and development at Maxar. 

 

Minimum Qualifications 

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident 

  • Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related STEM discipline plus a minimum of 3 years of experience; or a Master’s degree in the same fields plus a minimum of 6 years of professional experience. 

  • Experience with software development and algorithm design with Python. 

  • Advanced expertise and a track record of significant achievement in image processing or related fields. 

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 

  • Excellent leadership and collaboration skills. 

 

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Expertise in a subset of the following: machine learning, object detection, image segmentation, computer vision, image processing, remote sensing, spectral science, neural models for autonomous vehicles/robotics, structure from motion (SfM), natural language processing (NLP), large language models, data fusion, change detection, and pattern of life analysis. 

  • Experience with satellite image analysis using imagery from Sentinel-2, Landsat, MODIS, or high-resolution sensors. 

  • Familiarity with geographic information systems (GIS) and geospatial data. 

  • Experience in software design and development, including proficiency with modern software development practices and tools. Proficiency with continuous integration, and continuous delivery approaches to software development and deployment in cloud-based environments. 

  • Experience with Linux and GPU computing in an HPC cluster environment. 

  • Experience with cloud computing environments, such as AWS.  

  • Experience building applications in Docker containers. Experience automating their deployment, scaling, and management using Kubernetes. 

  • Experience building model inference workflows using model inference platforms or workflow orchestration tools, such as KServe or Argo Workflows. 

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with remote and/or geographically distributed teams.

We use geographic cost of labor as an input to develop market-driven ranges for our roles, and as such, each location where we hire may have a different range. To accommodate all locations, we have listed the bottom to the top of the possible range, and will share the target range for a specific location during the recruiting discussion. Individual pay will be competitive based on a candidates unique set of knowledge, skills, and geographic diversity, with earnings potential commensurate with experience. The range for this position is:

$107,000.00 - $229,000.00 annually.

Additionally, this position is incentive eligible with a target based on contribution, company performance, and/or individual results achieved; the specific incentive plan and target amount will be determined based on the role and breadth of contributions.
