About the Department

Neurosurgeons at UChicago Medicine are devoted to patient care, research, and teaching. These experts in the Department of Neurological Surgery offer the full spectrum of neurosurgical services for children and adults with brain diseases including aggressive brain tumors, back and spine degenerative diseases, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, and stroke. Our surgeons are truly at the forefront of neurosurgical care, utilizing the most advanced and sophisticated technologies and techniques to treat diseases of the brain and spine. Our expertise goes beyond that of delivering the best medical care; research is an integral part of our mission. With significant funding from the NIH in both bench and translational research, our staff and faculty are actively investigating complex conditions that affect the central nervous system, including cancer stem cell theory and aggressive brain cancers as well as the mechanisms behind cerebrovascular anomalies. This work serves as the groundwork for many new applications in neurosurgery, which will benefit patients for many years to come.

Job Summary

The job provides professional support and solves problems in collecting, organizing, and analyzing information from the University's various internal data systems as well as from external sources. The job performs data analysis assignments related to data manipulation, statistical applications, programming, analysis and modeling in order to support projects for the Department of Neurological Surgery.

Responsibilities

• Supports trainees and interns with database handling and statistics generation in our neuro informatics laboratory.

• Produces quarterly outcomes reports for multiple registries using Python.

• Analyzes moderately complex data sets for the purpose of extracting and purposefully using applicable information.

• Provides professional support to staff or faculty members in defining the project and applying principals of data science in manipulation, statistical applications, programming, analysis and modeling.

• Cleans, transforms, merges, and matches between large and complex research and administrative datasets. Plans own resources to collect, organize, and analyze information from the University's various internal data systems as well as from external sources.

• Builds and analyzes statistical models and reproducible data processing pipelines using knowledge of best practices in machine learning and statistical inference. Serves as a single point of contact for all requests and engages other IT resources to assist as needed. May partner with other campus teams to assist faculty with data science related needs.

• Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Preferred Qualifications 

Education:

• Advanced degree in Computer Science, Statistics, or Mathematics.

Experience:

• Prior experience working in Neuro-Informatics at an academic medical center.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

• Experience developing and implementing machine learning solutions for real world use.

• Familiarity handling terabyte size datasets.

• Proficiency in Python.

• Ability to handle multiple tasks and assignments simultaneously.

• Problem-solving skills, including a strong ability to prioritize and collaborate.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Proven ability to establish and stick to timelines.

• Excellent organizational skills, including strong attention to detail.
