Description

Advances patient health by developing and implementing internal and external communications programs, including public relations and internal/employee communications, that support the short- and long-term business objectives of BIPI/BIUSA associated with the company’s AI strategy and AI Center of Excellence (COE), including traditional and digital PR and social media activities and employee communications. Serves as primary advisor to and communications lead for the US AI COE on all AI related topics. Develops and manages the process for designing and delivering internal and external communication plans around the patient and business impact of Boehringer’s AI strategy and supporting programs. Advises business leaders on relevant communication strategies and oversees tactical implementation. Independently manages issues preparedness and response process for AI topics. Serves as company spokesperson and prepares additional company spokespeople with traditional, digital and social media on the topic of AI The management of Public Relations, including external and internal communications is vital to the success of Boehringer Ingelheim and its company reputation. This includes issues response/risk management to effectively respond to changes in the marketplace or in business priorities. Media engagement is a core responsibility of Public Relations and requires the ability to lead pro/reactive media relations to drive business results. This role requires strong capabilities to build relationships at all levels, collaborate and influence without authority to achieve cross-functional alignment both with US and global stakeholders.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for developing strategy and overseeing creation/ implementation of internal and external communication programs for AI Center of Excellence to achieve defined plan objectives. 
  • Serves as primary partner to AI CoE, the US Internal and External Comms, creating content plans that contributes to overall strategy and campaigns for AI across US HP. 
  • Assess ongoing performance that provides insight into impact and ongoing optimization of communications. Contributes actively to annual strategic planning across HP to ensure AI communications objectives are accounted for and achieved. 
  • Serve as a US subject matter expert on the communications around AI capability, working closely and primarily with HP colleagues to share communication learnings and best practices, develop AI communications governance, streamline ways of working, and help achieve AI CoE objectives. Responsible for collaborating and organizing touch points with several disciplines across all HP organizations to ensure alignment.
  • Together with other cross functional partners, contribute to AI upskilling within the HP organization via communications training materials and impactful education sessions tailored to the needs of the HP teams.
  • Partners with Government Affairs colleagues to amplify policy priorities related to AI via measurable public affairs campaigns and initiatives.
  • Independently manages issues preparedness and response process on topics related to AI, applying the US process with issues teams and partnering with US and global leadership to respond to issues. Remains knowledgeable of marketplace and external forces and trends that have the potential to impact products, diseases and/or the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Conducts and oversees effective media relations that achieves and/or contributes to overall PR plan(s) and objectives.
  • Builds open and collaborative relationships with global PR colleagues, as well as strong relationships with colleagues in marketing, medical, legal, regulatory departments, corporate communications, patient advocacy, stakeholder relations, government affairs and others based on the specific business need(s) of the assigned therapeutic area(s). 
  • Fosters alignment across stakeholders ensuring that global PR initiatives include US perspective and fit relevant business needs.
  • Contributes to selection of and leads consultants/agencies day-to-day activities as an extension of the in-house communications team to maximize performance, results, and ROI.
  • Responsible for overseeing and managing various PR/communications budgets and resources for AI CoE initiatives in cooperation with supervisor and marketing/other relevant function, while tracking progress as they relate to defined objectives and reporting results.
  • Conducts all activities in accordance with company policies and procedures.
  • Extensive interaction with functional areas is required, including: functional leadership, AI CoE, Marketing, Medical, Legal, RA, HPRC, Compliance, other customer-facing functions, global PR/communications, other global functions, finance, strategic sourcing, alliance partners (if any products are co-promoted).
  • This role requires independent cross-functional as well as US/Global stakeholder engagement to ensure that Public Relations and Communications objectives are aligned across stakeholders and ultimately drive business results. These activities can have a direct or indirect impact on the company reputation, therapeutic areas and ability to attract and retain top talent. 

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree from an accredited institution in PR/Communications (preferred), journalism (preferred, not required), or Marketing (preferred, not required)
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in PR/communications or other related field (such as marketing, patient advocacy, journalism) within the pharmaceutical industry is required for this role.
  • Pharmaceutical/healthcare experience
  • Experience cultivating and building relationships with the media
  • Agency management experience
  • Proven ability to develop, implement and lead a PR strategy that aligns with the strategic direction of the Company
  • Strong project, event and time management skills
  • Proven ability to build relationships and influence outcomes both with and without authority

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.
  • Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required).
