Who we are
The problem: Every minute matters in fire response.  As climate change amplifies the intensity of wildfires—with longer fire seasons, dryer fuels, and faster winds—new ignitions spread faster and put more communities at risk. Today, most wildfires are detected by bystanders and reported via 911, meaning it can take hours to detect a fire, verify its exact location and size, and dispatch first responders. Fire authorities need a faster way to detect, confirm, and pinpoint fires so that they can quickly respond—preventing small flare-ups from becoming devastating infernos.
About Pano: Pano AI is a 90-person growth stage start-up, headquartered in San Francisco, that is the leader in early wildfire detection and intelligence, helping fire professionals respond to fires faster and more safely—with the right equipment, timely information, and enhanced coordination—so that they can stop a new ignition before it grows.  Pano AI combines advanced hardware, software, and artificial intelligence into an easy-to-use, web-based platform. Leveraging a network of ultra-high-definition, 360-degree cameras atop high vantage points, as well as satellite and other data feeds, Pano AI produces a real-time picture of threats in a geographic region and delivers immediate, actionable intelligence.
Fast Company named Pano AI one of the Top 10 most innovative companies in AI of 2023. Pano AI has also been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, NBC News, and a national TV commercial produced by strategic partner T-Mobile. With dozens of government and enterprise customers, its reach extends across 10 states in the U.S., five states in Australia, and BC, Canada, helping protect more than 20 million acres of land. Backed by $45M in venture capital funding, investors include Congruent Ventures, Initialized Capital, Salesforce Ventures, T-Mobile Ventures, and Valor Equity Partners. The Role:
Join our elite data platform team on the frontlines of environmental protection! As our AI Platform Engineer, you'll architect cutting-edge systems that harness the power of artificial intelligence to detect wildfires before they become catastrophic. Imagine building technology that scans mountains and forests from above, processing vast streams of data from remote cameras and satellites to spot the first wisps of smoke or flickers of flame. Your code won't just run on servers—it will save homes, forests, and lives.
You'll tackle the challenge of managing diverse data ecosystems—from intricate structured datasets to massive image repositories capturing our planet's vulnerable landscapes. Working alongside brilliant AI engineers and platform architects, you'll create revolutionary software solutions that transform how we address one of humanity's most urgent environmental threats. Every algorithm you optimize and every system you enhance directly strengthens our planet's defense network against devastating wildfires. In our dynamic, agile environment, you'll balance the thrill of developing groundbreaking features with the craftsmanship of refining our core technical infrastructure. If you're self-motivated, passionate about technological innovation with purpose, and ready to apply your skills to protect our natural world, this is your opportunity to make a tangible difference in the fight against climate change.

What you’ll do

  • Build and manage tools to accelerate AI model inference, training, and validation
  • Develop internal tools for managing key internal processes, including dataset creation, data management (e.g. video creation), and results evaluation
  • Develop models that general panoramic images from a series of camera images and provide mappings forward and backward between these two domains
  • Develop methods to map AI predictions to other data sources utilizing geometric transforms and artificial intelligence
  • Enable Pano to scale AI detection by focusing on the overall system lifecycle, including monitoring and improving system reliability and optimizing for platform costs

What you’ll bring

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience plus a BS in Computer Science or equivalent
  • 3+ years of experience programming in Python
  • 2+ years of experience with AI frameworks, like PyTorch
  • 2+ years of experience working with relational databases (e.g. PostgreSQL)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Google Cloud
  • Experience with distributed computing architectures, especially Ray
  • Experience with computer vision, with specific experience in imaging and geometry
  • Experience with containerization including Kubernetes
  • Experience with CI/CD
  • Strong technical communication skills
