Who We Are

Nuro exists to better everyday life through robotics. Founded in 2016, Nuro has spent eight years developing autonomous driving (AD) technology and commercializing AD applications. The Nuro Driver™ is our world-class autonomous driving system that combines AD hardware with our generalized AI-first self-driving software. Built to learn and improve through data, the Nuro Driver™ is one of the few driverless autonomous technologies on public roads today.

Nuro has raised over $2B in capital from Fidelity, Bailie Gifford, T. Rowe Price, Google, and other leading investors. We’ve partnered with some of the world’s most respected brands including Uber, FedEx, Domino’s, Walmart, Kroger, and 7-Eleven.

About the Role

The Nuro Driver’s backup system is a redundant mini autonomy stack, which brakes to prevent collision as an extra safety level. You can think of it as an L2 self-driving system. The backup systems team engineers this system, including perception, prediction and risk reasoning, commanding emergency paths, and proving the system’s performance.

Our team also works on some other safety features within the driver, for instance reduced operation following hardware failures.

About the Work

You will work on at least several of the following:

  • Machine learning for general obstacle detection and motion prediction, using multiple sensors, with a focus on simple but effective representations for reliable performance.
  • Data mining and coding to predict future conflicts and to make a principled decision whether to start an emergency maneuver.
  • Code safe and physically achievable emergency maneuvers, integrating with our controls team and behavior team for handoffs to and from emergency mode.
  • Working with our operations and systems teams to prove that collision prevention meets consumer vehicle standards.
  • Large scale simulated testing for unintended risks of the backup system, and measuring differentiation in the failure modes of the primary and backup systems.
  • Implement and test short-term fallback driving modes for the primary Nuro Driver, including some fine-tuning or modifications of our “foundation” perception and behavior models.

About You

  • BS in Computer Science, Robotics, Statistics, Physics, Math or another quantitative area.
  • Python fluency and C++ familiarity.
  • Bonus points for experience in any of these:
    • 3D geometry and state estimation fundamentals
    • Lidar-based detection techniques, sensor fusion
    • Traditional robotic planning with kinematic constraints
    • Validating robotic systems with simulation and statistical metrics
    • ADAS concepts like TTC, PRT, and standards like FMVSS127
