Moderna is seeking a Senior Software Developer (SDE) / Machine Learning Engineer (MLE) to join the ML Platform Team in Warsaw. This role is pivotal in developing tools and infrastructure to support data scientists in both experimentation and productionalization of machine learning models. As a Sr. SDE, you will work closely with data science and application teams to deliver real-world AI/ML applications that drive Moderna’s mission forward.

Here’s What You’ll Do

Your key responsibilities will be:

  • Lead the design and development of software systems supporting machine learning solutions, ensuring scalability, efficiency, and robustness.

  • Architect and implement end-to-end machine learning pipelines, including data ingestion, preprocessing, re-training, evaluation, deployment, CI/CD, and automated testing.

  • Develop and maintain high-performance APIs and microservices to support AI-driven applications.

  • Optimize existing ML systems for performance and scalability.

  • Implement best software development practices, including code reviews, testing, and documentation.

  • Ensure compliance with data security and privacy regulations throughout the development lifecycle.

Your responsibilities will also include:

  • Collaborating closely with data scientists, product managers, and stakeholders to translate business needs into technical solutions.

  • Writing clean, maintainable, and well-documented code across a variety of programming languages.

  • Mentoring and guiding junior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and technical excellence.

  • Troubleshooting and resolving complex technical issues, ensuring reliability and performance of deployed ML systems.

  • Staying up to date with the latest advancements in AI and ML, integrating innovative technologies into Moderna’s software ecosystem.

  • Additional duties as may be assigned from time to time.

Here’s What You’ll Need (Basic Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

  • Extensive experience (5+ years) in software engineering, with a focus on AI and machine learning.

  • Demonstrated understanding of and prior experience with ML workflows

  • Experience building tools to deploy ML models to the cloud using CI/CD

  • Proven track record of designing and deploying large-scale machine learning systems in production environments.

  • Deep understanding of deep learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, PyTorch Lightning, JAX) and libraries (e.g., CUDA).

  • Experience with containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).

Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table (Preferred Qualifications)

  • 5+ years of experience delivering software projects, preferably in an industry setting

  • Outstanding communication skills (verbal, written, and virtual/remote)

  • Success in communicating effectively at multiple levels of stakeholdership

  • Demonstrated experience building machine learning workflows and executing complex and interdisciplinary software projects.

  • Fluency in Python, especially machine learning (Sklearn/PyTorch).

  • Experience with fine-tuning and deploying LLM technologies (e.g., Llama) on cloud infrastructure (e.g., AWS Bedrock).

  • Familiarity with best practices in software development including coding standards, code reviews, version control (Git), build process, software testing, operations, and documentation.

  • Knowledge of Amazon Web Services (like ECR, ECS, EC2, etc).

  • Experience troubleshooting and debugging technical systems.

  • Working knowledge of Unix operating systems.

  • Working knowledge of distributed systems/applications.

  • Working knowledge of databases (e.g., PostgreSQL).

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and effectively collaborate in a dynamic, cross-functional environment.

  • Experience in agile/scrum or related collaborative workflow.
