Since 2019, with strong support from the European Commission, OpenNebula Systems has been driving cloud & edge computing innovation in Europe, investing heavily in research and open source development. We play a strategic role in major EU initiatives such as the €3B IPCEI-CIS and the European Alliance for Industrial Data, Edge and Cloud.

We are currently looking for a Senior Research Engineer to join our Innovation Unit in Europe and contribute to the development of the next-generation management platform for the Cloud-Edge Computing Continuum.

Job Description

We are looking for a Senior Research Engineer with a strong background in cloud computing and/or Artificial Intelligence, ideally holding a PhD, to drive our participation in EU-funded research and innovation projects. This hands-on role requires deep technical expertise, proven experience in collaborative R&D environments, and a solid understanding of Horizon Europe or similar EU programs.

The candidate will lead the design, implementation, and coordination of our technical contributions across multiple projects, while also engaging with European partners, consortia, and institutional stakeholders. A strong interest in project leadership and innovation strategy is essential, as this role bridges advanced engineering with strategic thinking in shaping the future of sovereign and intelligent cloud technologies in Europe.

Our current focus includes the development of federated cloud-edge infrastructures, integration with 5G networks, and the enablement of AI Factories—sovereign platforms that support the secure and scalable deployment of AI workloads across distributed environments. The selected candidate will play a key role in shaping these efforts within the context of strategic EU initiatives.

What you will do

  • Analyze functional, integration, and use case requirements to make sure that OpenNebula meets the demands of the projects.
  • Define cloud-edge architectures for end-to-end integrated solutions that respond to the needs of specific use cases.
  • Identify the APIs, interfaces, and data formats of relevant software components and cloud services, as well as creating the documentation and diagrams of the integrated cloud-edge solution.
  • Identify and evaluate new technologies and innovations in cloud & edge computing, helping to drive partner relationships for alignment with our technology roadmap and business value generation actions.
  • Work closely with other companies in the cloud-edge ecosystem as part of international projects and open source communities.Writing and maintaining technical documentation and project deliverables.
  • Coordinate project communication and dissemination actions, participating in public events and producing public materials about our participation in R&D initiatives.
  • Lead technical participation of the company in international R&D projects, from initiation to delivery, ensuring adherence to project scope, milestones, KPIs, timelines, and budget.
  • Utilize management tools to track project progress, document project details, and generate insightful reports for analysis and decision-making.
  • Support our PMO in reporting on cost/roadmap/resource forecasting.
  • Contribute to the preparation of new project proposals.

What you will bring

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field. A PhD is highly valued.
  • At least 2 years of hands-on experience in research and development in the areas of cloud computing, edge computing, 5G, or artificial intelligence.
  • Proven experience participating in research and innovation projects funded by the European Commission (e.g., FP7, H2020, or Horizon Europe) or by EU Member States.
  • Availability to occasional travel and participation in international events and meetings.
  • Hands-on experience in managing or contributing to open source communities.
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural and geographically diverse work environment.
  • Strong leadership skills, including the ability to set goals and provide constructive feedback respectfully to build positive relationships and improve business results.
  • Ability to work effectively within a team in a fast-paced changing environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communications with ability to effectively communicate at multiple levels in the organization and to interact with external stakeholders.
  • Multi-tasks, prioritizes and meets deadlines in a timely manner.
