CAIS is launching a new online platform dedicated to high-quality journalism and analysis on AI’s impacts on national security, politics, and the economy. The platform will publish timely analysis of developments in AI policy and the AI industry, opinion pieces from leaders and experts in the field, and explainers distilling key insights from cutting-edge research. The platform aims to foster a higher-quality conversation on AI’s societal impacts, providing a more nuanced and well-informed analysis of developments than is possible in more generalist publications. It aims to be accessible to a broad audience and bridge the worlds of policy, national security and research.
We are seeking a Senior Editor to play a central role in shaping the publication’s editorial output, ensuring that all published content meets the highest standards of clarity, accuracy, and insight. The Senior Editor will be responsible for reviewing and screening pitches from external contributors, editing articles from both in-house journalists and guest writers, and maintaining a steady pipeline of well-crafted, high-impact pieces.
We are looking for an experienced editor with a deep understanding of technology, policy, and global affairs. The ideal candidate will have at least 5+ years of experience in journalism, editing, or digital media, with expertise in political analysis, technology reporting, or national security. They should be skilled at working with writers to refine their ideas and arguments, ensuring that articles are compelling, well-structured, and accessible to a broad audience. This role is open to both remote and on-site candidates; however, to ensure seamless collaboration, we require that all candidates be based in U.S. time zones.
In this role, you will provide:
Editorial Oversight & Content Quality-Review and screen pitches from external contributors, selecting the most insightful and relevant pieces for publication.-Edit and refine articles from in-house journalists and guest contributors, ensuring clarity, coherence, and alignment with the publication’s editorial standards.-Provide structural and substantive edits, offering detailed feedback to writers to strengthen their arguments and storytelling.-Ensure all content meets rigorous fact-checking and sourcing standards, working with contributors to verify claims and data.
Contributor Management & Development -Engage with a network of journalists, analysts, and thought leaders to cultivate a strong pipeline of high-quality submissions. -Work closely with external writers to develop article ideas, shape narratives, and refine arguments.-Maintain strong relationships with contributors, providing guidance on editorial expectations and feedback to improve future submissions.
Workflow & Publication Management-Maintain an efficient editorial workflow, ensuring articles move smoothly from pitch to publication while meeting deadlines.-Collaborate with the Managing Editor to maintain an editorial calendar, ensuring a consistent cadence of fresh, high-quality content.-Work with designers and multimedia producers to enhance articles with visuals, graphics, and interactive elements where relevant.-Assist in developing editorial guidelines and best practices to ensure consistency and quality across all content.
