Microsoft’s Corporate, External and Legal Affairs Department (CELA) has an immediate opening in Washington, DC for a Senior Director of Technology Security and AI Policy. In this role you will help drive in Washington, DC Microsoft’s policy agenda relating to key technology security policy, regulatory, and legal issues and our work with industry and thought leaders relating to them, in close collaboration with our government affairs and other subject matter teams inside the company. 

You will collaborate closely inside Microsoft with the CELA HQ team and with the Office of Responsible AI, trade legal team, Cloud + AI group, AI for Good Lab, Competition and Market Regulation Group, the Privacy and Regulatory Affairs Group, and with Public Affairs and other stakeholders. You will engage in Washington, DC with policymakers, regulators, academics, and others in civil society to consider the role of technology policy and regulation amid growing geopolitical and security challenges around the world.

The role requires demonstrated subject matter expertise in the intersection of technology, security, and scientific research, including with respect to the Middle East and Global South. It also requires a demonstrated commitment to the importance of cybersecurity and public safety, curiosity and interest in public thought leadership, and engagement in and a sophisticated understanding of the political and regulatory environment. Success in the role requires excellent cross-group collaboration and communication skills, and a positive team spirit.

In this role you will use your experience and knowledge of international affairs to build new relationships and engagements on the key policy priorities of importance to Microsoft’s global AI business. 

Responsibilities

  • AI Security: Help advance new policy frameworks and enhance policy partnerships with national security agencies and thought leadership community around key issues, such as:
    • The security of AI datacenters and highly capable AI models
    • The geopolitical importance of diffusing the Western AI tech stack
  • Strategic Partnerships: Collaborating with our global investment partners on USG advocacy and thought leadership, and community engagement.
    • These partnerships will require critical USG interactions relating to 1) education around the geopolitical importance of AI investments, 2) export and foreign investment controls, and 3) the national security considerations related to individual investments.
  • China AI Landscape and Issues: Engage with officials in Washington, DC regarding the AI landscape and related issues in China.
  • Supply Chain Security and Resiliency: engage with government officials and other stakeholders in Washington regarding key technology supply chain issues, including the geopolitical aspects of AI policy and regulation.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Public Policy, Public Administration, Political Science, Business Administration, Technology, Law, Liberal Arts, Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years work experience in government affairs, corporate affairs, public policy, government, or related area
    • OR equivalent experience.
       

Government Affairs IC6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $154,500 - $273,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $199,600 - $299,400 per year.
