About the role

The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) is currently seeking to appoint a Senior Data Scientist to join our Climate and Atmospheric Science branch within the Biodiversity and Conservation division under the ongoing Air Quality Program.

The Climate and Atmospheric Science Branch provides key information to the public on air quality, climate data and net zero emissions. This position reports to the Team Leader, Quality Systems and Reporting, and requires you to have a solid understanding of complex data processing and management systems. The successful applicant will be responsible for providing advanced technical advice and analytical support and contributing to the strategic direction and priorities of air quality science programs and projects.

About You

As the Senior Scientist Climate & Atmospheric (Senior Data Scientist), you will support the strategic direction of climate and atmospheric science priorities and manage and deliver high quality, cost-effective science projects with scientific rigour.

In this role you will develop and maintain a range of collaborative networks and provide timely expert advice on design and deliver of data management systems that meet high quality and availability objectives for the NSW air quality monitoring network.  You will prepare a range of project related documents and reports.

You have coding skills coupled with experience in use of software in Azure/AWS stacks (SQL, Data Bricks, Data Lakes etc or equivalent) will be considered highly desirable. Knowledge of reporting tools such as PowerBI or similar, will assist you in tailoring solutions that makes intelligence from big data available to end users/customers.

You will be committed to working collaboratively with a team to deliver customer-focused results and showcase our world-leading science.

You will have

  • Experience working collaboratively with a team to deliver customer-focused results from technical or scientific projects.
  • Expertise and advanced knowledge in environmental data desired, preferably with proven experiences in data analysis, air quality management and reporting.
  • Experience in project management and processes that improve productivity and encourage innovation.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present findings and recommendations effectively by converting complex technical information to an understandable and relevant format for the target audience.
  • Experience in complex data management systems

Essential requirements

  • Scientific qualifications, well-developed knowledge and demonstrated experience of one or more of the following: meteorology; atmospheric physics; atmospheric chemistry; air quality modelling.

  • Ensuring NSW is more resilient to a changing climate (Climate Change Policy Framework)

We operate the largest and most comprehensive air quality monitoring network in Australia, with more than 90 stations across the state providing hourly updated air quality readings to the web.

Participation in the NSW Biodiversity Offsets Scheme (BOS)
