About the Role

The Climate Solutions team oversees product development, innovation, and execution of Sustainalytics’ climate product portfolio within the commercial side of Sustainalytics business. Our team is seeking a new team member who is passionate about climate action and wants to leverage their Software Development skills to create and maintain of a suite of strategically important products that meet investor needs for measuring climate risks and aligning financial flows with the Paris Agreement and other high-level policy goals. 

As a part of our technology team, you would play a key role in developing models to forecast the effects of climate change on real estate. You will work on all aspects of the product, from the vision and the planning to the architecture and the development of the models. You will be working with smart, dynamic, and outgoing people in a fun and hardworking environment. 

This position offers the benefits and structure of a large organization with the creativity, innovation, autonomy and flexibility of a startup-like team. This position is based in our Toronto office. We follow a hybrid policy of 3 days onsite and 2 days remote work.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Developing and improving big data models in Python to quantify the financial impact of climate-related events like floods, wildfires, landslides, cyclones and more on real estate properties; 
  • Organize and structure the development to solve complex problems (agile, communication, strategy); 
  • Writing high-performance, well-designed and testable Python code;  
  • Working with big data (TB+ datasets) with a focus on parallelization and scalability; 
  • Learning and using some of the most recent geospatial technologies leveraging datasets from NASA, NOAA and other geospatial data (vector and raster data); 

Qualifications:

  • Senior Developer with 10+ years relevant experience with Python, Pandas, NumPy, test-driven development, Git; 
  • Innovative thinking for model improvement and optimization. 
  • Proven experience with data analysis, statistics and visualization; 
  • Strong documentation skills to ensure clarity and reproducibility of models. 
  • Experience working with gridded datasets: 
  • Geospatial work; 
  • Multi-dimensional arrays; 
  • Satellite imagery; 
  • Image processing. 
  • A background working with a Linux-based OS; 
  • Excellent English language skills (French is a bonus); 
  • A Software Engineering degree or any Computer Science related equivalent. 

Valued Skills:

  • Dask, Xarray, Spark 
  • Experience with working with Game Engine aspects, such as rasterization, ray tracing, etc. 
  • Experience with setting up ETL pipelines; 
  • AWS: 
  • Batch; 
  • EC2; 
  • S3; 
  • ECS. 
  • Docker 
  • Prior experience in developing, researching or working with climate models is highly desired
