If so, come join the legal team supporting Microsoft’s Cloud + Artificial Intelligence (C+AI) division in the role of Senior Corporate Counsel, Cloud + AI Enterprise Cloud Services Regulatory Compliance.
The C+AI Trusted Platform Legal Team provides legal support to the compliance engineering team that drives legal and regulatory compliance programs, initiatives, and requirements across the enterprise products and services in the C+AI business division at Microsoft, including Azure, Dynamics 365, and Power Platform. Our team counsels clients across a variety of legal domains and engineering disciplines, including enterprise data governance, security, data residency, privacy, digital safety, responsible AI, financial services compliance, healthcare, environmental sustainability, and global availability engineering. We do this in partnership with key stakeholders across engineering and legal subject matter expert teams.
This attorney will engage in a combination of engineering client-facing support, regulator-facing interaction and engagement, and management of major regulatory initiatives across the company on behalf of C+AI. This attorney will engage internally and externally to build Microsoft’s position as a trusted partner for regulated enterprise cloud services customers.
Responsibilities
- Serve as trusted advisor and primary legal counsel for the C+AI Trusted Platform Customer Compliance & Regulatory Engagement team. Work with clients to proactively address and mitigate regulatory issues, including by driving compliance with and engaging in advocacy related to new regulations. Partner with lawyers across Microsoft supporting enterprise compliance engineering to harmonize internal requirements and external narratives across diverse products and services.
- Serve as trusted advisor and primary legal counsel for the C+AI Trusted Platform Security, Digital Safety, and Environmental Sustainability compliance teams. Work with clients to develop programs and systems that help us scale compliance for these areas across a diverse set of enterprise products and services.
- Partner with a variety of Microsoft subject-matter experts (SMEs), including Competition, Privacy & Regulatory Affairs, Intellectual Property Group, Customer Security and Trust, Office of Responsible AI, Digital Safety, Environmental Sustainability, Commerce/Payments & FinTech, and others, to track, interpret, and identify trends in regulatory requirements and developments worldwide. Identify developments that may impact the design, distribution, sale, or use of enterprise products and services and explore and advocate for positions that could mitigate such impacts. Provide advice grounded in an understanding of how relevant laws and regulations may impact regulator relationships and the development and distribution of enterprise products and services.
- Collaborate with relevant SME teams to translate legal and regulatory requirements into engineering-facing guidance that can be operationalized at scale, while enabling continued product innovation and timely product launches. Work with product and foundation engineering clients to promote compliance by design in engineering architecture, programs, or processes. Identify and anticipate legal risks in the client’s technology, program design, or process design and assist clients with developing creative solutions and alternatives to mitigate potential risk in a cost-effective way.
- Collaborate with our commercial, marketing, and engineering teams to develop regulatory narratives and contract commitments. Draft and negotiate contract language to memorialize Microsoft’s growing compliance commitments and develop programmatic updates to address future regulator and customer escalations.
- Create efficiencies by developing scalable resources, distributing helpful information, providing presentations and trainings, and holding office hours.
Qualifications
Required/Minimum Qualifications
- Juris Doctor Degree or international equivalent degree AND 6+ years experience as a practicing attorney
- OR equivalent experience.
- Active license to practice law in a jurisdiction and capable of meeting admission requirements in relevant jurisdiction.
- Experience counseling engineering or technical clients and translating legal requirements into actionable engineering-facing guidance
- Experience managing and driving to closure long-term, highly-matrixed, cross-organizational projects
Prefered Qualifcations
- Familiarity with hyperscale cloud computing and Microsoft Online Services (or equivalent)
- Keen business sense, ability to think strategically and communicate effectively, and ability to establish a trusted advisor relationship with business and engineering clients
- Ability to lead and drive to resolution complex projects with diverse stakeholders in varied disciplines and geographies through collaboration; willingness to be available for occasional evening and early morning meetings with stakeholders in different time zones
- Experience responding to requests or inquiries from enterprise customers, regulatory entities, non-governmental organizations, or standards bodies
- General familiarity with global data privacy, digital safety, competition, environmental, AI, security, and other laws, regulations, and codes (e.g., GDPR, CCPA, BIPA, PIPL, DSA, DORA, Data Act, AI Act, NIS2)
- Flexible and analytical thinker able to quickly and accurately identify legal issues in a complex environment and to develop solutions by exercising confident judgment in ambiguous situations
- Demonstrated ability to work efficiently, meet demanding deadlines in a fast-paced environment, and prioritize workflow when faced with competing demands
Legal Counsel IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $141,800 - $248,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $179,300 - $268,900 per year.
