Watson Research Center’s Hybrid Cloud Infrastructure Research team. IBM Research is seeking students interested in working with a team of accomplished technologists to invent what’s next for IBM and the world. As a Hardware Engineer intern, you will work with world-class global researchers focused on design and development of next-generation Artificial Intelligence compute chip and network interconnect technologies.

Your Role and Responsibilities
This is for a 2025 summer internship with the following start dates: May – August or June – September for quarter system schools.
Cloud Infrastructure Research group at IBM Research focuses on the next generation of cloud infrastructure for IBM Cloud and AI systems. The research agenda of the group spans multiple technical areas in the context of hybrid cloud and AI systems, including networking, security, high-speed networked-storage, accelerators.

The selected candidate will focus on systems design for AI infrastructure, developing and prototyping solutions and techniques for future AI workloads including Foundation Models training. Responsibilities of the candidate will also include evaluation of the solutions from performance, scalability, security, and resiliency perspectives.
– Experience in Linux Operating Systems
– Experience with GPU Systems
– Programming expertise with C and Python
– Familiarity with executing AI training, tuning and inferencing workloads
– Familiarity with AI system performance evaluation.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise
Experience with the following:
GPU Systems
Machine learning workload and performance analysis
AI System Design Experience
Containers and Kubernetes
Programing langueses: Python and C
Operating Systems: Linux

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise
Experience with following:

  • Analyzing the performance of workloads on large scale systems Micro benchmarks
  • Running training, tuning, and inference workloads
  • Publishing papers in systems conferences, such as Super Computing, SOSP, IEEE Cloud, Pytorch Conference, NVIDIA GTC, NSDI, ACM Middleware, IEEE Cluster, ISPASS
