About the Team
The Voice Architecture team at OpenAI is dedicated to pioneering new architectures and paradigms for next-generation large language models that integrate advanced speech and audio capabilities. Our work lies at the intersection of audio processing, natural language understanding, and real-time interaction. We focus on building seamless, multimodal systems that can handle speech input and output, operate efficiently at scale, and excel in complex real-world settings. This team also works on related cutting-edge research in areas like audio-visual video understanding, source separation, speech translation, alignment, and diarization. Ultimately, our team aims to redefine how users engage with AI through natural, context-rich, and fully immersive speech experiences.
About the Role
As a Research Manager on the Voice Architecture team, you will lead the design and development of novel multimodal audio architectures, ensuring that our models and systems push the boundaries of audio-language integration. You will collaborate with researchers and engineers across multiple disciplines—ranging from machine learning and distributed systems to human-computer interaction—driving forward the vision of fluid, real-time, and human-centered speech interfaces. Your leadership will be instrumental in enabling faster iteration cycles, guiding foundational research, and delivering groundbreaking capabilities for real-world, large-scale deployments. The systems you will help build will push the boundaries beyond what is possible with today’s technology.
This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.
In this role, you will:
We are seeking research engineers and research scientists to help design and implement experiments for alignment research. Responsibilities may include:
Contribute to the technology through your own ML experiments and code contributions
Work closely with individual contributors and tech leads to develop, communicate, and execute research projects and strategies
Mentor to researchers and engineers, helping them perform at their peak and advance their careers
Create a diverse and inclusive culture that encourages open dialogue
Develop tools and comprehensive benchmarks to evaluate the accuracy, latency, robustness, and user experience of multimodal audio models
Work across a variety of teams in research and applied engineering to collaboratively build ground-breaking products
You might thrive in this role if you:
Have leadership experience in a research setting, ideally 2+ years.
Are a team player – willing to do a variety of tasks that move the team forward.
Have relevant research experience in multimodal ML and multimodal language models
Have a PhD or equivalent experience in computer science or machine learning.
Have strong engineering skills, particularly in designing and optimizing large-scale machine learning systems(e.g., PyTorch).
Have a deep understanding of the science behind multimodal algorithms and techniques.
Enjoy fast-paced, collaborative, and cutting-edge research environments.
