Job Title: Research Intern (PhD Level) – Sports Science, Computer Vision, and Machine Learning
Location: Santa Clara CA, or remote
Duration: 3 months full time (possible extension to12 months in either full or part time mode)

Position Overview: We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled PhD-level research intern to join our cutting-edge research team specializing in sports science with a focus on computer vision and machine learning. The successful candidate will work on innovative projects aimed at applying advanced computational techniques to analyze athletic performance, improve injury prevention, and optimize training programs. This is an excellent opportunity for a PhD student to gain hands-on experience in the intersection of sports science and artificial intelligence, contributing to impactful research with real-world applications in sports performance.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct independent and collaborative research applying computer vision and machine learning techniques to sports performance analysis.
- Develop and implement algorithms to analyze motion capture data, video footage, and sensor data to evaluate athlete performance and biomechanics.
- Use advanced techniques like pose estimation, action recognition, and motion tracking to provide insights into athletic movements.
- Collaborate with partners like sports scientists, coaches, and other experts to translate research findings into practical applications for performance enhancement and injury prevention.
- Design and execute experiments to assess the effectiveness of machine learning models in predicting injury risk, improving technique, or optimizing performance metrics.
- Analyze and interpret large datasets from video footage, motion sensors, or wearable technology.
- Contribute to the development of research papers, technical reports, and presentations for both academic and professional audiences.
- Participate in regular research team meetings and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including sports experts, data scientists, and engineers.
- Stay current with the latest research and technological advancements in computer vision, machine learning, and sports science.
- Assist in the preparation of technology proposals, research presentations, and publications.
Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in a PhD program in Computer Science, Sports Science, Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Biomechanics, or a related engineering field.
- Strong foundation in computer vision techniques, including image processing, object detection, pose estimation, and motion analysis.
- Experience in machine learning and deep learning methodologies (e.g., neural networks, reinforcement learning, convolutional neural networks).
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, TensorFlow, PyTorch, and other relevant libraries for machine learning and computer vision.
- Familiarity with sports science concepts, biomechanics, or physiology as they relate to performance analysis.
- Experience with data processing and visualization tools (e.g., OpenCV, Matplotlib, Pandas).
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively present complex technical concepts to interdisciplinary teams.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced research environment.
- Strong problem-solving skills and an ability to approach complex challenges with creativity and critical thinking.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience applying computer vision and machine learning to sports science, biomechanics, or performance analysis.
- Familiarity with motion capture systems, wearable sensors, or other data acquisition technologies used in sports science.
- Prior experience with publishing research in peer-reviewed journals or presenting at academic conferences.
- Understanding of the physiological and biomechanical aspects of athletic performance.
- Knowledge of human-computer interaction in the context of sports technology.
