In its role as a coordinator of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Joint Industry-Academic Doctoral Network “AI in Parkinson’s Disease (AIPD)” the Fraunhofer Institute for Algorithms and Scientific Computing (SCAI) is thrilled to announce 14 PhD open student positions at different participating institutions. AIPD will train a group of 14 Doctoral Candidates in an intersectoral, international and interdisciplinary setting with the aim to educate the next generation of medical data scientists.

AIPD’s competitive research program covers areas of highest interest for science and society with applications to Parkinson’s Disease:

  • How can AI/ML algorithms support earlier diagnosis, stratification into patient subgroups, prognosis, and detection of treatment response?
  • How can AI/ML algorithms contribute to a more objective monitoring of disease symptoms, e.g. via digital voice and gait recordings, and neuroimaging?
  • How can all of that be realized in an ethical, legally compliant and trust preserving manner?

What you will do

As a Doctoral Candidate in medical data science you will become part of the AIPD doctoral network, which includes leading institutions and researchers in academia and industry across Europe. You will work on one PhD project of your choice under direct supervision of one academic and one non-academic researcher. Lab rotations as well as a competitive training program with strong focus on transferable skills and competencies are an integral part of AIPD’s educational concept.

Find out more about AIPD and individual PhD research projects at https://www.aipd-dn.eu.

What you bring to the table

The specific requirements for each position are dependent on the individual PhD project. More information can be found here: https://euraxess.ec.europa.eu/search?keys=AIPD. In general, you will fit to us, if you fulfill the following criteria:

  • M.sc. with excellent grades in an area which is relevant for the position you apply for
  • high level of intrinsic motivation and enthusiasm for translational research connecting academia and industry
  • depending on the PhD project: clear understanding of statistical and mathematical concepts underlying Data Science
  • strong passion for Data Science plus an equally strong interest in biomedicine
  • dependent on the PhD project: strong programming skills in R, python, PyTorch
  • ability to work independently
  • very good English speaking and writing skills
  • very good communication skills

What you can expect

Our program stands out by a strong translational focus bridging academia and industry. PhD candidates will benefit from:

  • Networking Opportunities: AIPD enhances collaboration with leading institutions and researchers in academia and industry across Europe.
  • Training and Skills Development: AIPD offers comprehensive training in research and transferable skills, contributing to professional growth.
  • Career Advancement: AIPD increases the employability and career prospects of researchers through high-quality research experiences.
  • Innovation and Impact: AIPD drives innovation and contributes to societal challenges by supporting cutting-edge research projects in the intersection field of AI and biomedicine.
  • Recognition and Prestige: Affiliation with a Marie Skłodowska-Curie program is highly regarded, adding significant value to the researchers’ profiles.

The exact salary of each PhD student position is defined by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA - https://marie-sklodowska-curie-actions.ec.europa.eu/) and is to be confirmed upon appointment. The basic gross amount is composed of Living Allowance = 3400 EUR/month (multiplied by a MSCA Country Correction Coefficient) AND Mobility/Family Allowance = 600 to 1260 EUR/month, depending on the family situation.

This position is available and financed for 36 months.

It is also available on a part-time basis. We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal qualifications and suitability. Terms of contract according to European Commission's Marie Curie fellowship scheme.
