PHARMACIST    

Provides leadership role for staff in performance of functions involved in the safe, efficient distribution of medications, in accordance with relevant laws, rules, regulations and standards of pharmaceutical care.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Quality and Accuracy
  • Reviews physician’s orders and prescriptions to ensure appropriateness of drug therapy.
  • Inputs physician’s medication orders into Pharmacy Patient Medication Profile and maintains this profile and related records.
  • Monitors patient medication profile in order to prevent drug interactions, allergic and adverse drug reactions.
  • Provides drug information and communicates with prescribers, nurses and other staff regarding drug therapy or safe drug handling.
  • Supervises Senior Technician I’s Pharmacy Technician II’s and other support staff in the performance of assigned duties.
  • Performs patient teaching functions on appropriate use of medications.
  • Monitors and oversees that the Pharmacy is kept in a neat, clean and orderly fashion
  • Performs quality control checks in accordance with departmental procedures.
  • Quantity /Organizational Skills
  • Clarifies any physician’s medication order with the physician and transcribes physician’s telephoned orders onto physician’s order sheet for Counter-signing by the physician.
  • Supervises and maintains the routine pick-up and delivery of medication and the unit dose cart fill and cassette exchange process.
  • Conducts orientation, training, and educational programs as required.
  • Conducts quality improvement tasks in conjunction with other staff members.
  • Participates on assigned hospital committees
  • Gathers and analyzes data for selected drug utilization reviews.
  • Performs all duties in a professional, effective and confidential manner.
  • Performs all other duties as required or assigned
  • Maintains high level of performance on I.V. preparation utilizing the proper aseptic technique.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Baccalaureate degree in pharmacy or equivalent
  • Current license or registration to practice pharmacy
  • Current Active DHA Pharmacist Licensure

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of two (2) years post-graduate experience in pharmacy practice
  • Knowledge of actions, side effects, adverse effects, and appropriate use of commonly employed drugs
  • Knowledge of current technology and pharmacy systems for distribution of medications
  • Knowledge of pharmaceutical and medical terminology abbreviations and symbols

  • Reviews physician’s orders and prescriptions to ensure the appropriateness of drug therapy and prescriptions are dispensed, per prescribers’ intentions.
  • Monitors patient medication profiles to prevent drug interactions and allergic and adverse drug reactions. 
  • Provides drug information, on the proper use of medication and communicates with prescribers, nurses, and other staff.
  • Inputs physician’s medication orders into Pharmacy Patient Medication Profile and maintains this profile and related records. this is applicable only during system downtime and in exceptional cases where verbal orders have been accepted. 
  • Performs patient teaching functions on appropriate use of medications, non-prescription medications and/ or over-the-counter drugs. Assist in providing a symptom assessment leading to over-the-counter medication provision and lifestyle advice for community-based health concerns. 
  • Adequately Inform patients and the public about the side effects of medication. In addition, to monitor such unwanted effects and their consequences in collaboration with other health care professionals and the appropriate authorities. 
  • Supervises Technician Pharmacy and other support staff in the performance of assigned duties.
  • Registering all Controlled Drugs (CD) and Semi-Controlled Drugs (SCD) dispensed prescriptions in the corresponding Dubai Health Authority Register Book.
  • Monitors and oversees that the Pharmacy is kept in a neat, clean and orderly fashion.
  • Medication stock levels are maintained at both the Pharmacy and Ward levels. 
  • Medication storage and drug administration inspected to ensure it is in line with laid down standards. 
  • Ward stock charged monitored Stock is ordered, received, and issued according to American Hospital Dubai's stock management principles.
  • Excess, expiry and obsolete stock is managed.
  • Manages stock returned for credits and outstanding orders.
  • Follows up on defective products. 
  • Establishes Inter-hospital stock transfers that are controlled for doctor / ward-specific medication needs.
  • Participates in Inventory according to American Hospital Dubai's policy twice a year. 
  • Participate in cycle count as part of inventory management. this includes an investigation of stock variances. 
  • Dispenses medications with proper labelling and instructions regarding the usage, dosage and information on side effects as well as precautions. 
  • Ensures that medication stock levels are maintained at both Pharmacy and Ward levels according to American Hospital Dubai's stock management principles.
  • Conducts inspections of medication storage and drug administration to ensure it is in line with laid down standards. 
  • Generates controlled/semi-controlled/narcotic drug reports and submits them as per Ministry of Health regulations. 
  • Documents incident reports and adverse drug reactions when needed and required in line with American Hospital Dubai's policies. 
  • Ensures that the patient billing process is adhered to.
  • Processes cash and card transactions in line with  American Hospital Dubai's finance policy.
  • Participates in Drug Utilization Review programs and contributes to quality processes within the department.
  • Demonstrates professional ethics and competence in all performance output areas according to Dubai Health Authority's code and conduct. 
  • Ensures that confidentiality of patient information is maintained and adheres to the code of ethics of the profession. 
  • Plays an active role in prevention, detection and resolution of drug-related problems.
  • Provides drug-related information to doctors, hospital staff and patients.
  • Ensures that client expectations are met and that quality client service principles are maintained. 
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy
  • Current active home country registration
  • Dubai Health Authority (DHA) License

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of three (3) years relevant experience working as a pharmacist, preferably in a hospital and/or clinic
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to build and maintain rapport with patients
  • Ability to communicate calmly and effectively when counselling patients
  • Fluent in written and spoken English; Arabic language skills will be well-regarded
  • Excellent computer skills and ability to use ERP systems accurately and effectively
  • Demonstrate understanding and practice of confidentiality
  • Demonstrate awareness of, and adherence to, quality standards
  • Good organizational and time management skills
  • Demonstrate understanding of, and adherence to, processes and procedures
  • Ability to work cohesively in a multidisciplinary team
  • Able to prioritize tasks and manage my own workload
