Provides safe transport of patients to and from the operating rooms. Provides transport and storage of equipment and supplies.

  • Prioritize tasks ensuring effective functioning in the area.
  • Follows the chain of command in reporting incidents or concerns.
  • Prioritizes workload and completes correspondence on time.
  • Ensures a safe working environment through strict compliance with Hospital Policy and Procedures regarding safety, infection and security.
  • Helps coordinate patient flow inside the Operating Room and transfers of equipment from the other departments under the direction of the Holding Bay Nurse and the Unit Coordinator.
  • Assists staff nurses in transporting patients from the ward to the Operating Room and following procedures and assists with returning patients to the appropriate ward.
  • Identifies patients using the two identifiers (name and MRN).
  • Assists with transport and positioning of patients within the Operating Room and as requested by the Operating Room Staff.
  • Assists nursing staff with the movement of equipment safely within the Operating Room or to and from other areas and uses equipment safely.
  • Transports of Operating Room's tables safely within the Operating Room Department
    • Specialty-related equipment, such as microscopes and camera stacks laparoscopic trolleys are not included.
  • Assists registered nurses in transporting critical patients from/to the Operating Room.
  • Checks and re-stocks specimen containers and ensures an adequate supply of Formalin as needed.
  • Sorts and distributes laundered linen and ensures there is an adequate linen supply.
  • Maintains stock levels of designated consumable products used in the department.
  • Checks and re-stocks warming cabinets with blankets, linen and irrigation fluids as necessary.
  • Delivers needed special mail/documents to another department from/to the Operating Room.
  • Collects medications from the Pharmacy as required.
  • Delivers supplies and equipment as needed to the Central Sterile Services Department (CSSD).
  • Delivers specimens to the Laboratory as/if needed using the proper transportation box.
  • Collects and stores supplies as needed.
  • Participates in the orientation of other staff as required.
  • Keeps patient Porter audit slips up to date and as accurate as possible.
  • Keeps work areas clean, tidy and general tidiness of the Operating Room corridors.
  • Participates actively in unit staff meetings (60% - 80% meetings per year)
  • Participates in developing and achieving unit goals.
  • Performs additional duties when required within the scope of practice.
  • High School Graduate

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:

  • English written/spoken proficiency
  • Organisational and Customer service skills/experience preferred
  • Basic Life Support (BLS)/Heart Saver preferred
