SOME IT WORKS. SOME CHANGES WHAT'S POSSIBLE.

SHARE YOUR PASSION.

More than 90% of automotive innovations are based on electronics and software. That's why creative freedom and lateral thinking are so important in the pursuit of truly novel solutions. That’s why our experts will treat you as part of the team from day one, encourage you to bring your own ideas to the table – and give you the opportunity to really show what you can do.

We, the BMW Group, offer you an interesting and varied master thesis position focusing on LLM-enhanced in-vehicle personal assistants. With the emergence of a new field in Large Language Model (LLM) Learning centered around planning and reasoning, there is significant potential to handle more complex user requests. However, this increased capability comes with the challenge of higher inference-time compute, leading to increased latency. Your research will be crucial in exploring the user experience within this new paradigm, which balances fast response times with the need for more compute to deliver higher-quality answers.

What awaits you?

  • Conduct research to evaluate the customer value of switching bit low-latency, standard answers, and more compute-intensive, higher-quality answers in LLM-enhanced in-vehicle personal assistants.
  • Develop and investigate effective communication methods to reduce the perceived latency by the user during interactions.
  • Prepare/conduct a user study to evaluate the user experience and challenges, including how much the user should be kept in the loop.
  • Collaborate with our cross-functional teams to integrate your research findings into our operational in-vehicle personal assistant platform.

Please note that your thesis must be supervised by a university on your part.

What should you bring along?

  • Enrollment in a master’s program in Media Informatics, Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field.
  • Strong proficiency in prototyping full stack (Python, Android/ UI design Kotlin).
  • Hands-on experience in designing intuitive user experiences, including familiarity with user interface frameworks and prototyping tools.
  • Experience in designing and conducting user studies to evaluate customer value and gather feedback on prototype implementations.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a technical outstanding research and development team, contributing innovative ideas.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English for effective teamwork and documentation. German is a plus.

What do we offer?

  • Comprehensive mentoring & onboarding.
  • Personal & professional development.
  • Flexible working hours.
  • Digital offers & mobile working.
  • Attractive remuneration.
  • Apartment offers for students (subject to availability & only Munich).
  • And many other benefits - see bmw.jobs/benefits
