Background
In many of the cameras in the production line, as a last assessment, the pass/fail quality of the image is determined by an operator. This approach is highly dependent on which operator is determining the quality, and the outcome of pass/fail might vary depending on many factors. There are many benefits of removing the source of error of using operators to determine quality of the end product, one of them being that you get an unbiased measure of quality. It is also in line with Axis long term production goals to get rid of the operator dependency.
Goal
The goal is to investigate if machine learning could be used to detect defects in the image quality of the end product. Previous studies have found it possible to detect such defects when a controlled dataset was used, however it was not applied on real data to a satisfactory degree. This thesis would build on the existing work to improve the algorithms, data manipulation and training methods in order to evaluate if achieving near or above human level of detection on real production data is possible. The result should also present an investigation of the robustness of the resulting algorithm.
