As a Manager for ML Research on the Perception and Safety R&D Team, you will lead a small highly-leveraged group developing ML capabilities for robotic perception technologies that will enable our robots to operate safely around people. Every day you will work to build, lead, and nurture a team that researches, designs, and builds machine learning-based perception models to run on our robots. You will help chart a course for a future where humans and robots can coexist in complex spaces. You will also get hands-on with the team as you develop and integrate your work into the embedded perception systems that make our robots safe and reactive.
Boston Dynamics is a world leader in mobile robots, tackling some of the toughest robotics challenges. In this role you will work to create novel solutions to one of the most important problems in robotics. If you are creative, thrive in a small team environment, and passionate about a world where humans and robots truly work together - come join us!
How you will make an impact:
Grow and lead a team of people to develop scalable, measurable, highly performant ML models for robotic perception
Manage a roadmap, a technical strategy, and stakeholder requirements
Work with cross functional teams to meet system-level goals
Collaborate with other managers and engineers on difficult design problems
Communicate requirements and dependencies to supporting teams
Develop approaches to build, validate, and deploy ML models to detect hazards, humans, and other environmental features.
Lead the integration of these models onto our robots' embedded systems to collect data and evaluate performance.
Develop data sets, metrics, and validation plans for ML models
Work to improve model accuracy and run-time performance of models on specific hardware
We are looking for:
7+ years of experience applying ML to robotic perception problems, ideally on embedded systems.
3+ years of engineering management experience in a professional and product driven environment
Deep knowledge of state of the art in related areas including human detection, autonomous vehicle and driver assist systems, and robotic perception
Experience developing scaled high-performance perception systems for safety-relevant systems, such as autonomous vehicles, driver assist systems, or medical devices
Experience developing and deploying ML-based perception software for time-sensitive control systems, such as robotics.
Experience developing specifications for ML-based perception systems from high-level product requirements
Experience with the full lifecycle of deep learning development, including network design, data management, training, evaluation, hyperparameter search, deployment, and validation
Strong communication skills, including ability to author technical documentation and deliver presentations on technical topics
History of leading cross-functional technical efforts through planning, technical requirement development, and interdisciplinary collaboration
History of working in small, interdisciplinary teams.
