About the Role
The Manager of Financial Reporting plays a vital role in overseeing OnePlan’s financial reporting processes, ensuring compliance with accounting standards, and providing critical insights to senior management. Given the unique challenges of a SaaS business, such as recurring revenue models, customer acquisition costs, and the need for precise revenue recognition, this role demands expertise in SaaS-specific accounting and the ability to adapt financial reporting to the company’s growth trajectory.
At OnePlan, the Manager of Financial Reporting will deliver accurate internal financial reports, have a role in managing investor relations, and ensuring scalability as the company expands. The financial reporting manager will also work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure that financial metrics and business drivers are aligned with the company’s strategic objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Revenue Recognition & SaaS-Specific Accounting: Oversee Revenue Recognition: Implement and ensure compliance with ASC 606 (Revenue from Contracts with Customers), ensuring accurate accounting of subscription revenues, deferred revenue, and performance obligations in multi-element contracts (e.g., SaaS licenses, support services, professional services). Subscription Metrics: Track, analyze, and report on key SaaS performance metrics such as ARR (Annual Recurring Revenue), MRR (Monthly Recurring Revenue), Customer Lifetime Value (CLV), Churn Rate, and Net Revenue Retention (NRR). Ensure these metrics are effectively communicated to senior management for decision-making.
- Financial Statement Preparation & Accuracy: Internal Reporting: Provide high-quality internal reporting to the executive team, including detailed financial analysis and variance reports that break down revenue, gross margin, operating expenses, and EBITDA. Highlight areas for improvement and cost-saving opportunities.
- Budgeting, Forecasting & Financial Analysis: Collaborative Budgeting and Forecasting: Partner with senior leadership and department heads (e.g., sales, product, operations) to prepare accurate budgets and financial forecasts based on business strategies and objectives. Ensure forecasts account for SaaS-specific dynamics like renewal rates, churn, and expansion revenue. 2 Variance Analysis: Conduct detailed analysis of budget vs. actual results, explaining variances and recommending actions to optimize financial performance. Use historical data and current trends to support forward-looking financial planning.
- Internal Controls & Compliance: Audit Coordination: Manage the annual audit process with external auditors, ensuring all necessary schedules and documentation are provided in a timely manner. Assist in addressing audit findings and ensuring compliance with private company regulations.
- Investor Relations & Stakeholder Reporting: Investor Reporting: Manage the preparation of financial information and investor reports for private equity firms, and other stakeholders. This includes quarterly updates, annual reports, and ad-hoc financial data requests. Board Presentations: Prepare financial presentations for the Board of Directors and executive leadership, ensuring that key financial results and SaaS-specific metrics are clearly communicated.
- Team Management & Development: Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to optimize the financial reporting process by improving internal workflows, enhancing automation in financial tools, and ensuring the team remains efficient and responsive to business needs. Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with other teams, such as sales, and product, to ensure that financial data aligns with business strategies and customer contracts. Assist these teams with financial guidance and insights to drive performance.
- Systems Implementation & Process Improvement: Technology Optimization: Evaluate and implement financial reporting systems and tools to streamline reporting processes, improve accuracy, and support the SaaS business model. Data Integrity: Ensure that financial systems are properly integrated with operational and customer management systems to ensure accurate reporting of subscription revenues, customer contracts, and financial performance metrics. Automation: Drive automation initiatives in the financial reporting process to increase operational efficiency and reduce manual data entry and reconciliation.
- Ad-Hoc Projects & Strategic Support: Ad-Hoc Reporting: Assist with special projects such as product launches, expansions into new markets, or restructuring initiatives that have a financial impact. Provide financial modeling support for various business scenarios. Strategic Decision Support: Provide strategic financial insights and data to help senior leadership make informed decisions about growth, expansion, and operational efficiency.
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration. A CPA, MBA, or Master’s in Accounting is strongly preferred.
- Experience: 5-7 years of financial reporting experience within a SaaS company or a technology-driven business, with a deep understanding of SaaS revenue models and financial accounting for subscription businesses.
- Technical Skills: Expertise with GAAP or IFRS, ASC 606 for SaaS revenue recognition, and familiarity with SaaS-specific financial tools (e.g., QuickBooks, Salesforce, Hubspot). Proficient in Microsoft Excel and financial modeling techniques.
- Knowledge: Strong understanding of SaaS-specific metrics, business models, and key performance indicators (KPIs), as well as familiarity with private company reporting standards and funding models.
- Soft Skills: Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate complex financial data to both financial and non-financial stakeholders. Ability to manage competing priorities and tight deadlines.
- Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with a knack for identifying financial trends and areas for improvement.
- Collaborative & Dynamic: The position will involve working closely with cross-functional teams such as sales, marketing, legal, and operations, ensuring that financial reports align with overall business strategies and performance.
