The AI Research Lab at Bell Labs Solutions Research invites applications to Intern / Thesis worker positions in machine learning. The Lab has a long tradition of excellence in research and currently consists of 80 staff members with expertise in algorithmic and computing sciences, stochastic networks, information theory and machine learning.

The successful candidate would be working in a team consisting of machine learning scientists and engineers, including experts in deep learning, reinforcement learning and differential privacy. The team has a strong track record in inspiring and supporting thesis writing. The team provides a possibility to create new academically and industrially relevant.

  • Educational recommendations: M.Sc. / Ph.D. students in the relevant field (e.g., machine learning, mathematics, telecommunications, computer science, data science, programming) with software design skills. For M.Sc. students, status in studies must allow writing an M.Sc. thesis on the work topic.
  • Location: Espoo, Finland

We are looking both M.Sc. students or PhD students to work in our team in the Bell Labs AI Research Lab’s ML Methods and Applications Team at the Espoo site. MSc student would carry out Master’s thesis work in one of the following potential topics:

  1. Design and implementation of privacy-preserving machine learning algorithms with Differential Privacy
  2. Developing machine learning solutions for AI-driven wireless communications
  3. Reinforcement learning for autonomous robot navigation and manipulation, with potential use of foundation models.

The topic will be chosen based on candidates’ preferences and skills. We have world class researchers that will be instructing each of the topics.

For PhD students, we offer an internship position in which students would carry out research on the above topics. Results could potentially be part of his/her thesis.

Please indicate your preferred topic among the three options in your application.

Requirements:

  • Simulation and programming skills (e.g., Matlab and Python).
  • Together with the team, you should be able develop machine learning methods and applications
  • English language skills – English is preferable language of your thesis and the everyday working language in our organization.
  • M.Sc. / Ph.D. students in the relevant field (e.g., machine learning, mathematics, telecommunications, computer science, data science, programming) with software design skills. For M.Sc. students, status in studies must allow writing an M.Sc. thesis on the work topic.

It would be nice if you also had:

  • Experience with machine learning algorithms or related topics (optimization, statistics, etc)
  • Plus: Experience with design, development and debugging software in distributed computing environments.
