POSITION SUMMARY: 

Natera is seeking a Machine Learning Engineer within our Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning team, focused on cancer genomics and medical imaging. Leveraging a wealth of both genomic and imaging data, the successful candidate will play a key role in implementing and expanding state-of-the-art deep learning models and foundation models to drive innovations in precision oncology. This role involves close collaboration with AI researchers, bioinformaticians, and medical professionals to drive innovations in precision medicine.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Model Implementation: Develop and implement state-of-the-art deep learning models, including convolutional neural networks and foundation models, for analyzing genomic sequences, medical imaging, and clinical outcome predictions.
  • Model Interpretation: Apply explainable AI (XAI) techniques to interpret multimodal model results of molecular and imaging, ensuring actionable insights for medical experts and business demonstrations.
  • Data Pipelining: Perform data wrangling, including cleaning, transforming, and preprocessing large multimodal datasets (e.g., genomic sequences, imaging, and clinical metadata) to ensure quality and consistency for machine learning workflows.
  • Reproducibility and Documentation: Ensure reproducibility through well-documented code, annotated workflows, and interactive demonstrations (e.g. in Jupyter notebook) in version-controlled repositories.
  • Model Deployment and User Interface: Build and maintain user-friendly, interactive interfaces to enable seamless exploration and interpretation of AI model results by non-technical users, including clinicians and researchers.
  • Communications: Communicate scientific results through internal meetings, scientific conferences, and peer-reviewed publications.
  • Collaborations: Collaborate with medical experts to guide research and development.

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Master’s in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, or a related quantitative field with 5+ years experience OR 
  • PhD in the above fields with 3+ years experiences.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: 

  • Strong expertise in PyTorch and associated ecosystems (e.g., Lightning, torchvision, captum, HuggingFace).
  • Proven track record in medical imaging for oncology, such as H&E whole-slide imaging, CT scans, immunohistochemistry staining.
  • Proficient in Git for version control and Jupyter Notebooks for scientific communication and workflow reproducibility.
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS) and GPU-accelerated computing frameworks is a plus.
  • Ability to clearly summarize and communicate results in oral and written form.
  • High scientific rigor and eagerness to teach and learn about new machine learning methods and biology.
