Position Title: Operations Leader - Duke Health AI Evaluation and Governance
Location: Durham, North Carolina
Description: The Duke Health AI Evaluation and Governance (E&G) program focuses on assessing and overseeing AI algorithms in healthcare. Led by the Duke Health AI E&G Director, we ensure the safe, effective, and ethical use of AI in clinical decision-making at Duke and beyond. Duke Health AI E&G focuses on initiatives and projects that enable the responsible and trustworthy selection, development, deployment, and use of AI, while raising awareness within the community. A flagship program is the Algorithm-Based Clinical Decision Support program that oversees all algorithms intended for patient care. Our team includes diverse experts—researchers, physicians, data scientists, and ethicists—from Duke and partner institutions. Together, we develop robust evaluation methods and frameworks tailored for health AI algorithms and their governance. To strengthen our team, we are seeking a qualified and experienced Operations Leader that will lead the team and drive forward Duke Health AI E&G’s mission and goals. In this role, the Operations Leader will manage day-to-day program operations, lead program and project level activities, and support strategic initiatives. Responsibilities include developing and managing program operations, facilitating team communication, monitoring team performance, collaborating with leadership to prioritize and start-up projects, and organizing team-building activities. The Operations Leader will also assist with HR, finances, grant management, and strategic program management. Join us at the forefront of healthcare and artificial intelligence.
Program and Operations Management (40%)
- Develop and manage day-to-day operations of the Duke Health AI E&G program, ensuring alignment with program goals, objectives, planned budgets, and those of related projects.
- Manage strategic programs/initiatives, including creating charters, plans, and executing on them.
- Identify program and project risks, facilitate prioritization efforts in collaboration with the director, and ensure timely mitigation and resolution.
- Keep leadership, team members and stakeholders informed of identified issues and potential changes in scope, fostering transparency and proactive problem-solving.
- Collaborate with Duke Health AI E&G leadership to identify and prioritize future projects and initiatives, ensuring strategic alignment, resource optimization, and sustainability.
- Liaise with Duke University School of Medicine functions, e.g. HR, and other partnering Duke entities on operations, implementing Duke policies and procedures; create and establish Duke Health AI E&G policies and procedures within the team.
- Maintain strategic documents and communication plans to facilitate broad dissemination and alignment with program objectives. Foster purposeful communications within the team, facilitating productive meetings and driving progress towards program goals.
- Ensure implementation of success metrics, reports, and processes to measure program effectiveness
- Assist with HR tasks, financial management, and grant administration to ensure smooth program operations, resource utilization and sustainability.
- Track program expenses to ensure it is on budget (including both fiscal year and grant budgets) and approve program expenses as needed.
- Translate ideas to actionable deliverables to drive forward mission
Communications & Collaboration (10%)
- Establish and communicate short and long-term timelines and milestones, utilizing appropriate tools and technology for efficient tracking and progress monitoring.
- Facilitate collaborative discussions and decision-making, and develop detailed task lists, work effort assessments, and resource allocation plans based on input from key stakeholders and team members, identifying resource needs.
- Ensure effective communication and dissemination of program-related materials and documentation.
- Manage communications and dissemination of program related activities, organizing and coordinating program-related events such as information sessions, webinars, and internal/external meetings in collaboration with director of communications.
Team Management (30%)
- Manage direct and matrix reports setting clear and achievable team goals aligned with Duke Health AI E&G objectives.
- Lead regular cross-functional team meetings to achieve program deliverables effectively.
- Communicate timelines and expectations effectively to team members.
- Provide guidance and support to the team, ensuring adherence to high performance standards and fostering a positive work environment conducive to collaboration and innovation.
- Delegate tasks effectively, establish appropriate deadlines, and monitor team performance using relevant metrics.
- Recognize and reward high performance, fostering a culture of excellence and innovation.
- Direct managerial staff and functional group personnel on operational and strategic activities and develop and mentor staff, focusing on selection, training, coaching and all other people practices as well as promotion of team spirit and collaboration.
- Build new talent, leverage internal expertise, and develop a strong and deep bench of expertise that can assist with long-term strategic needs of evaluation-focused AI Health offerings
- Manage the staff performance assessment process, review performance assessment feedback and conduct regular meetings with direct reports and all staff.
- Manage performance concerns and disciplinary action in collaboration with HR.
Project Management (20%)
- Start up new strategic projects developing charters and engaging stakeholders for planning and execution.
- Serve in a project management capacity, as needed.

Education/Training
Bachelor’s degree, with an advanced degree preferred.
This position also requires special training in project management. A degree in Management or relevant training in team leadership is a plus, demonstrating a commitment to professional development and continuous learning.
Experience
Work requires at least one year in a supervisory or lead-worker capacity and at least four years of experience in program administration and management.
- Proven work experience as an operations and team leader or supervisor, preferably in a healthcare or technology-related field. Skills necessary to plan, coordinate and implement a variety of program activities and events.
- In-depth knowledge of program performance metrics, with the ability to interpret and analyze data effectively.
- Strong organizational, analytical and time-management skills, capable of prioritizing tasks and managing multiple projects simultaneously.
- Effective decision-making skills, with the ability to make informed judgments in complex and rapidly changing environments.
- Proficiency in computer skills, particularly MS Excel and project management software, for planning and reporting purposes.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to articulate vision, goals, and expectations clearly and inspire others to action. Excellent writing skills. Experience in grant writing, or scientific writing is a plus.
- Experience working in healthcare or life sciences is a plus
- Experience in event management is desirable, given the potential involvement in organizing workshops, seminars, or other collaborative events related to health AI evaluation and governance.
