Who We Are:

Calico (Calico Life Sciences LLC) is an Alphabet-founded research and development company whose mission is to harness advanced technologies and model systems to increase our understanding of the biology that controls human aging. Calico will use that knowledge to devise interventions that enable people to lead longer and healthier lives. Calico’s highly innovative technology labs, its commitment to curiosity-driven discovery science, and, with academic and industry partners, its vibrant drug-development pipeline, together create an inspiring and exciting place to catalyze and enable medical breakthroughs.

Position Description:

Biology is rapidly becoming a data science, with an ongoing explosion in the amount and quality of biological and medical data. These data can be transformative to our understanding of biology and disease, but deriving these insights requires a careful and rigorous analysis that often goes considerably beyond existing methods.

Calico is seeking a strong leader in the field of computational science, with rich experience in tackling biological problems, for the role of its Head of Data Science. This role entails leading and building our team of world-class data scientists, who develop and apply advanced computational approaches to biological data in order to better understand the process of aging and aging-related diseases with the goal of developing therapeutic interventions. These efforts come through collaborations with our discovery, translational, and technology groups, where the data span multiple organisms (from yeast to human), scales (from molecule to entire organisms), data modalities (from physiology to sequencing to imaging to free text), and time scales (from single time points to continuous time series).

Position Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in any of these computational fields: Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Statistics, Genetics, Computer Science, Machine Learning or related fields, with a deep understanding and passion for biological research
  • Minimum of 15 years relevant experience in positions of increasing responsibility, including at least 10 years in a management role, with a track record of building and managing an innovative, high-performance team
  • Strong track record of collaboration with diverse biological groups tackling a wide range of biological questions
  • Deep understanding of the diverse data types used in biological and/or medical research (e.g., gene-expression, genomic sequences, proteomics, imaging, physiological data, etc.), including experience in development and application of a variety of modern analytical approaches in the fields of computer science (e.g., machine-learning with an emphasis on modern neural network architectures) and statistics (e.g., GLMs and Bayesian models)
  • Track record of effective collaboration on complex projects involving cross-functional partners with very diverse backgrounds
  • Must be willing to work onsite at least 4 days a week

The estimated base salary range for this role is $344,000 - $370,000. Actual pay will be based on a number of factors including experience and qualifications. This position is also eligible for two annual cash bonuses.
